Okay, so yeah I’m new to this site, and okay yeah, i have had a few beers this evening, but i am by no means new to home audio, car audio, or tacomas. I have been waiting for an 08 tacoma for about 4 months and now its here and my system is going in finally (it has been sitting on my living room floor waiting). I would like to maybe help some people who are planning upgrades.

first off: YOU CAN PUT SUBS IN YOUR DOUBLE CAB (in fact you can even put 12s in). its not that complicated, all you have to do is remove the plastic paneling behind your rear bench. Then you can add a custom box (for 12s) or buy a box from one of the MANY online dealers for 8’s or 10’s. Here are a few examples:
    http://www.soundoffaudio.com/item.cfm/id/2331
    http://www.supercrewsound.com/shop/detail/11/189.htm
    http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_stealthbox_detail.php?fit_id=1583
So yeah, as you can see those are the 10 inch solutions. So now youre thinking but you said 12s as well. Well that’s a simple solution. The fact with 12s are is there is no box out there I know of that is mass produced. However, the idea behind the rear seat sub placement is that you have to get subs that are just under a 6 inch mounting depth. This means that if you build your own box you can fit say jl 12W1v2. Most 12 inch subs need about 1-1.5 cubic feet sealed enclosures to achieve max sound quality. This is very doable in a taco. You can buy a sub that allows for that mounting depth by simply going to a site like crutchfield.com and searching for “shallow mount subs.” Then yeah, if you want 12s, youre gona have to either build your own box or have it built for you. Try googled Mr. Marve and contacting him. He’s great with tacomas though I have found hes hard to reach (he is but one man). You can also contact your local A/V dealer and ask about custom installs

    AMP PLACEMENT.

I have two amps and they are both about to go in (ive been waiting oh so long). The general rule with the amps is try and keep them about about 2.75 inches high or less and you can fairly easily mount them under taco seats on amp racks with enough room to allow for air flow. Youll also probably have to cap the air vents under the seats so that the amps don’t over heat in the winter. You can mount an amp on sub boxes if youre running tens or 8s and have extra room but if you want to get real picky amps don’t like being around that much vibration if they don’t have to be.

    OEM REPLACEMENT and INTEGRATION.

You can absolutely replace any unit on a 05-08 taco. It doesn’t matter if you have the jbl system or not (although if you bought the jbl system when planning to upgrade anyway I might go as far to say youre foolish) You can replace the OEM headunit with either a simple receiver or a flat screen in dash monitor. Its not that hard and if you look around the forum youll see a million great picks of this being done.
Another route (the one I took) is adding a factory inhancer so that you can keep your dash as is. What this means is your OEM cd player with process the signal as it usually does and then send it to a processor. This processor will completely flatten (ideally) this signal, add its own equalizer effects (that you have set) and send that signal to your amps which then goes out to your subs, mids, tweets ect. Yea, I simplified this a lot, but the point is okay. A few links to what I (and most) think are the best out there are

    http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?search=alpine+imprint&i=500PXEH650
    http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=318850&i=5753SIXTY2&search=3sixty&tp=6870
    http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?search=clean+sweep&i=136441DSP
and if you are waiting for a while, you should ABSOLUTELY look into the upcoming JBL MS-8 (its gona be nuts) and by the way I run the imprint

DOOR REPLACEMENTS- anyone can give you info on this, its very basic

IPOD CONNECTION- again, there are a million threads on this, check any of them out (side note, the factory inhancers listed above all account for ipods or AUX out)

AGAIN, I have been drinking, so if you have questions, I have a lot more to offer. I have been researching 08 tacoma doublecab install for about 4 months. I have spent way too much money and way too much money but now I might be able to help you. Just remember, there really isn’t a car you cant upgrade the OEM system in.

hey there, good choice on the jl box, that is what i did as well, but beware the jl box definitly involves messing with the plastic behind the rear bench. you can see that in the picture on the jl site or the crutchfield site. however you have the option of completely removing the plastic and setting the box in that way you can put it back in later. i found this a good option because it allows you to fabricate an amp rack as well behind there which is what i did. in regards to the amp for that box you absolutely should go with the jl 250/1v2 monoblock. its built to run those 10W1's. i have that running my subs and a 300/4 running my doors. im not just saying it cause im a jl fanatic (which i kind of am) but anyone will tell you jl amps are badass and that you should run a jl sub with the propper jl amp. goodluck and id love to hear how it goes. -rg

the jl enclosure is 'loaded' which means it comes with the two 10W1's in it. it sells for 680 on crutchfield and i dont really think youll find it too much cheaper, i bought it for 750 from m y local dealer. the amp is around 350 or 400, i dont really remember. its an expensive situation i know but if you have the money this stuff is the real deal.

Hi again, umm in response to removing the plastic, i let a professional do that. im comfortable with the audio equipment much more than messing with brand new car parts. but i can say this, im going back to the installer on the 8th to finish some stuff up. ill ask about how they removed the piece while im there so if youre still looking for an answer at that point ill help you out. sorry i cant help sooner

Just remove the bolts and pull real hard and fast. It just has plastic clips. They won't break. I've removed my storage compartments several times.

Even if you do break the clips they are a real standard size and can easily be replaced.

With a 3/4" wood baffle I was able to fit 2.5" deep mids. Just make the baffles by copying the shave of the stock speakers. Or go the lazy route and get some ********* adapters.

Dealer by me has the JL stealthbox for much less than $600. Shop around... I'm trying to find a way to fit a W7 10 inch without giving up a seat.

you found a loaded stealthbox for less than 6??? where did you find this? i'd also be interested in a way to mount a W7 behind that seat, as the mounting depth and mounting heights both exceed the maximum distance between the seat and rear panel. did you find an easier way to move the rear bench forward?

I was wondering wether or not to run the 2 JL AUDIO 10W3v3 in a 2ohm or 4ohm i have not purchased the amp yet but here are the specs on the speakers.

    Nominal Diameter: 10 inches
    Continuous Power Handling: 300 Watts
    Coil Resistance: 2 ohm
    Xmax (one-way, linear): 0.550 in. / 14.0 mm
Driver Displacement: 0.049 cu. ft. / 1.39 liters
    DC Resistance: 7.240 ohm
    Efficiency (1W/1m): 85.22 dB SPL
    Mount Depth: 5.93 in. / 151 mm

I found a box to hold the speakers and that will still fit in the truck just need suggestions on what amp to choose and wether or not to buy the 2ohm speakers or the 4ohm

if you are running two subs you need to get the 4ohm because when you bridge them the ohms will drop to 2. most amps are stable ar 4or 2 ohms not 1 ohm, so if you bridge two 2ohm subs it will drop to 1 ohm and eventually blow the amp. I just ordered two kicker 10" cvr subs with the supercrew sound box. I still have to figure out an ampt to get for the system.
