08 4X4 Double Cab TRD Sport

I just installed my Pioneer HU and GEX-P920XM, which are compatible. The HU recognizes the GEX-P20XM but then says "check antenna". The antenna is connected fine. I am not an XM subscriber yet- don't want to subscribe until everything is working. The GEX manual says there are free xm channels that I would receive without activation.... just not getting any with the "check antenna message. Any thoughts?

IDK if it is any help but the wife's Accord's OEM HU comes XM ready but we've never subscribed. It will play 2-3 free XM stations
