Last weekend's project...

Before taking my Tundra in to trade for the Tacoma, I stripped all of my stereo gear out except for the door speakers. I went to Wally World to pick up a cheap cd player to fill the hole.

Moving ahead, I spent last weekend squeezing everything from a double cab Tundra into a double cab Tacoma.

The head unit is an Alpine CDE-9886. The amp is a Hifonics Zeus Xi-8000, 1100 watts. Sub is a Pioneer 10" thin mount in a Pioneer factory box. Front speakers are Polk MoMo 6x9 three-way coaxials and rears are Polk MoMo 6.5" two-way coaxials.

This is only a temporary build since I already had this equipment. My goal is to get a better amp (JL Audio) and get Mr. Marv to build me an almost identical backboard, but with the sub box integrated as one piece.

If I had to evaluate my results, this is what I would have done differently. First, I would have put components in the front. I have built many systems over the years and I have never had this much trouble getting one to sound right. This same system (other than speakers) sounded pretty good in my last truck. I had Polk dB component speakers before. Next, I would not have bought my dash kit from *********. I paid waaaayyyyy too much for a poor product. Not to mention that the FREE tools went in the trash. Those crimpers couldn't close the FREE connectors without bending. Oh well, live and learn. I had already ordered this stuff before learning about TW and Mr. Marv. My bad.

I actually want to pull most of it back out this week and clean it up a little more. I was really starting to run out of steam when it started making sound. I had gotten through about half of the wiring behind the backboard before I realized there was a better way. But thanks.

 

How does that pioneer sound?

The Pioneer 10" actually sounds pretty good for what it is. It is a shallow mount and has a relatively short throw so the sound is tight and responsive. That works out good for me since I'm an old fart and prefer tighter bass. Boomy bass is not my cup of tea. If you're looking to rattle the neighbors windows as you pass, this setup is not for that.
