I like the Sony better. I've listed the differences that I have noticed that would matter to me. I just think you get a lot more for your money with the Sony.

    Sony:

120dB S/N on CD player vs. 105db for Alpine
USB input on the front of the head unit (Alpine rear).
    AUX input on the front.
    Built in Bluetooth
    Wireless remote is included
    $10 cheaper

    Alpine:

9.3dBf on radio tuner vs. 10dBf for Sony.
    Bluetooth optional
    Wireless remote optional
    AUX input optional

Personally, I'd jump on an Alpine 9887. Fully active capability, can run fullspeed ipod controls, and it's a pretty good SQ unit for what it is. I believe it has aux in, but I'm too lazy to pull up the specs :p Can be had for about 225$

Also worth noting, the Pioneer 800/880 prs if you can find one, but it might cost you some coin.

I'm a sucker for expandability, because I don't think that an audio system is ever "finished". It's only a matter of time before you get sucked into it, and hear someone elses car with a different setup and want to try it out. Or you hear about a new driver that you want to try. It's a mess.
