so, i know you get what you pay for, but i'm not looking to get a lot, just something a little better than stock. i was thinking a lower end double din setup with a small amp and some new speakers (probably no sub). i did come across this today, and i can get it at a store near me for $50...i know it's a terrible unit compared to stuff out there, but my ??? is, is it better than the stock setup http://www.techronics.com/caraudio_...package.html?gclid=CNb1-ueWtqACFQxinAodxSeBTg

also, would i need an amp to run that head unit and the 4 speakers that come with it?

if so, would this 300 watt amp from the autoparts store be sufficient?

You would not need an amp to run those speakers with that head unit, but it would certainly help. But, then again, spending a little bit more money for a better headunit would be my vote.

As for the amp, sure it will work. Again, I think you'd be better off spending a little bit more money for something of a bit higher quality. If you are just looking for something as a stop gap, then I think you should save some more cash and get a better H/U. I have found the change in H/U is the best bang for the buck change, next to adding a dedicated sub and amp. This is typically due to functionailty, as a nice HU will allow ipod control and additional EQ type functions to mould the sound to suit you better.

IMO I'd stick with the stock stuff. Which stock deck do you have? If it's the 6 disc you can burn MP3 discs and have a lifetime of music in there.

 

i have the 6 disk stock setup, but i actually wired an ipod cable to it, so no need for the mp3s.

i'm really just looking for a little better, and maybe a little bigger sound. nothing drastic.

buddy of mine actually found a great deal on a no-name double din setup i think it was $200. he said he was hesitant becaseu of the off brand, but that he's fallen in love with it and hasn't had any problems. really i'd get the double just because you can watch dvds on it.

 

Then your best bet would be to go with new speakers and keep the stock deck. It's a fairly clean source and new speakers (efficient ones) should liven things up a bit.

 

sony car audio stuff sucks in general, so I'd stay away from sony. for a hu, look for a pioneer or alpine. they make very solid units.

 

i don't know exactly what you mean by efficient...do you have a set you recomend? i'm thinking the budget will be around $200-$250 for a set of components. if i can also replace the rears and stay in that range it's be great, but i can go over if the rears will cost more.

 

Efficient means that you get more sound per watt of power you throw at them. 93db is pretty efficient and will sound great off the stock amp.

The Focal 165V1 set is very efficient. I had a set in my IS300 and they were sick. Throw a pair of those in the front doors and deaden and seal the front doors. This will help with bass response from the new speakers. I wouldn't worry too much about the rears. Focus on the front.

 

this might help. If you are looking to get the best bang for your buck I would say craigslist it. You can find a lot of new and used audio for half the price of buying it new from a store. And about the h/u and speakers I would stay away from that.

 

I'd keep the stock unit over Sony. Id rather have a lower level pioneer. I dont understand the reason to replace crap factory with crap aftermarket?

so for about 200 bucks you can have a decent sounding stereo. No need for an amp either

 

i just upgraded to and aftermarket deck/ head unit from crutchfield

 

sounds a ton better then stock everyone who rode with me when i had the stock deck as commented on how much better it sounds with just upgrading the deck the rest of my audio is stock

 

hey, thanks for all of the great responses i think i mentioned earlier that i am in the process of finishing my suspension work (lifted up front, rear is on order, and i'm about to get some UCAs) that being said, i don't quite have the funds to do a head unit and speakers at the same time. Kevin, will i notice a difference if i just get a set of the 6.5s you linked to and do the HU in a couple months, or will should i wait and do HU and speakers at once. oh and where do y'all recoment getting the deadening material from?

 

I did my HU first and noticed a pretty good difference. It sounded MUCH better over the stock radio. But since your using an ipod hookup on your factory HU, you might want to get a little better aftermarket HU that will accept MP3 hook ups.

I dont know if new speakers will make a difference with the factory deck since its only pushing out something like 8w per channel...and you wont have all the good EQ adjustments on the stock deck to make them sound right either

I would save your $50 towards your savings for a better deck and speaker upgrades later. Do it once, do it right. Just take your time and you can always start with one step at a time. Like HU then speakers, then amp then sub then w/e else left.
