Looking to buy a surf rod, Help!

going down to obx to do some surf fishing, looking at a ten foot rod dont know which kind, need help picking one or going with a better size, and need help with reels too thanks for the help

 

I worked at an outfitter/reel repair center for years and I must say Abu-Garcia and Shimano are the best you can get. We worked on everything too. Remember with fishing rod/reels you get what you pay for, especially using them in saltwater. Most of the el cheapo combos you get are throw aways, if it breaks theres no parts so just throw it out and get another one. For a rod any thing from 8-11 ft will cast it way out, my favorite surf combo is a 9'6'' rod with an Abu Garcia Amb. 6500 on it....

No prob you wont be disappointed by the shimano, after use hose it off with fresh water and store it in a dry shaded area. Also while down in the obx don't be fooled by the crowd and think you need to cast way out, usually I have better luck in the shallower water that runs down the shore. Ive caught some nice red drum in about 5 ft of water down at oregon inlet...

For rods, go with Lamiglass. They have a lifetime warranty. If you break it, they will replace it.

 

I fished up on corova beach last week. Just got back yesterday. We were staying in corolla in whalehead. I actually had good luck just past the first green buoy once you start driving up the beach. Caught a decent flounder on my first cast w/ shrimp. I was fishing w/ two rods. I had a standard bottom rig w/ #1 hooks and #2 weights on both rods w/ shrimp on one and squid on the other.

The surf fishing sucked on friday though..the current was way too strong and just kept pulling my line down the beach and up onto the shore.

I have been fishing w/ a "throw away" rod for 10 years and just now had to replace the reel this year. However I only surf fish maybe two weeks out of the year.

 

cool, well now i know what to use, idk where we are gonna be at per se but i think after you hit the split to go either north or south, we are about 25 miles north haha, but yeah ill try the green buoy if the current isnt too bad ill be sure to post up pics if i catch anything for everyone to see

Big bump i know but i just wanted to show everyone the rod and reel i got for surf fishing, got it for my birthday yesterday from my brother, Its an 11.5 ft avenger rod and 7 bearing wheel, 20lb. test line looking to get a shock leader but heres a pic of the rod:

looks good man. my roommate actually uses a shimano reel similar to that on an Ugly Stik rod and he loves it. catch a big one!
