Any recommendations for an entry-level fly fishing setup? I have never fly fished before, but just recently moved to Boise, ID and the Boise river is 25 yards from my patio so I have no excuse now.

Nice!! LL Bean makes a nice setup and its under $150 for everything http://m.llbean.com/productlist.html?nav=-2136&page=fly-fishing-outfits#2136 . If you can find a fishing outlet somewhere you can get great deals. Orvis lifetime warranty FTW!

Here is a monster I caught...

For starting and making sure you enjoy it? WalMart sells kits that are under $100. They work good enough and once you know that you enjoy it you can spend the big bucks.

A guides not a bad idea but isn't necessary either. IMO I would learn to cast before getting a guide. I learned the basic technique off youtube and it became fluent after practicing. Casting is not that hard. Catching fish...well that can be challenging. Since guides cost a lot, I would rather spend less time learning to cast and more time on the water.

Sounds good, I will have to check around and find a local guide. Thank you for that insight.

I agree to an extent. I have friends that guide but they don't have much pointers for me. Occasionally they notice something but most of the knowledge I get from them is which fly to use and where to put it. I took it pretty serious when I first started and got pretty good at doing it. If he has the cash to burn then yeah, have at it. Otherwise he can go in with the basic knowledge of casting. Then the guide can further help by showing him that his elbow is flappin in the wind or he is using to much wrist, etc.

This. Casting is everything. I've worked on and off in flyshops most of my life and have done some guiding and taught a lot of casting classes. Find a good guide or find a shop that does casting instruction for whatever your skill level is, it will pay off for everything from small pocket water to flats to big rivers. I've been to ascension bay a few times, guides down there barely speak english and its up to you to be able to put a cast out accurately while dealing with every kind of wind you can imagine. They'll get you to the fish but you've got to have enough experience to deal with the conditions (always windy) or you're gonna end up fishing muds all day.

Better subscribe to this thread. Done lots of fly fishing here in Michigan. Have fishing tripped planned for Florida key in the end of April, but have never fly fished salt water, spin castings only.

Will be checking the thread for hints and tips.

Did you do the factory tour ? I went last year & it was very interesting. Something I have always wanted to do .Usually I am out fishing & don't want to use my time up there for anything else but fishing. Well worth the trip . That Battenkill is a real challenge

I am five hours away & my wife loves the outlets too. Every spring she says "are we going to Vermont" ? I used to think it was about fishing . BUT NO !

How much fishing have you done there? Ever fish the NY end? Like I say I'm only 40 miles from the Manchester area so I plan on heading that way a bit too.

Yeah, by accident and it wasn't trout fishing, just fly fishing.

The company sent me to Clarksville on buisiness for 2 weeks. I knew I'd have time after work to check out the Cumberlan river.

Turns out I threw in one of my fly fishing kits instead of a spin casting rig. Got to the river and saw I had grabbed the wrong rod and bag. I guess I'm going fly fishing.

It was kind of funny. I had many people walk by and ask me what kind of fishing rod and reel that I was using. Apperently fly fishing on the Cumberland river is not common.

Catching fresh water drums is still fun.
