If you live in Laramie or Casper theres some really good open water within a 4 hour drive thats going off right now. I drive 2.5 hours to my spot cause I know how to fish it, and theres a chance of catching some really big fish. I could fish my local water and catch a ton of 16-18in cutthroats right now, but no chance of a 25+incher....

I might be driving out east but I might just check the local waters. I've never went out looking for monsters and doubt I ever will haha. That's were all the people gather. When I catch a big ol' 20''+ I am quite satisfied considering my favorite trout to catch is a brookie :p

I caught a 20" brookie once and it was a surprise for sure! I admit that I am a big fish hunter though. Best thing about where I go is I fished all day yesterday and most of today and saw about 5 or 6 people in 15+miles of public water. I too hate the crowds!

The pond nearby my house has rules that only kids can fish it...or the guardians with them. Well it was boiling today, good 6-10 inch bows leaping out of the water.

"Excuse me sir, can I borrow your kid for the day? I would like to "teach" him how to fly fish"

What do you guys prefer, chest pack, sling pack or back pack? What are you using?
    I can't decide on a new pack...

I prefer a backpack now days but that's generally because I am carrying camping gear too. I have condensed my gear to small fly box, extra leader, tippet, and forceps. So unless I am packing in a lunch or some rain gear I just toss those in my pocket and carry my rod and a bottle of water in my hands.

I hate having gobs of gear on me.

I have a chest pack. Its an Allen Green River chest pack.

It like it, but sometimes it feels too bulky. Im not in the best of shape (beer belly) so it kinda sticks out a bit, especially if Im wearing a heavier jacket.

I wanna pull the trigger on a waist pack eventually I think. Something smaller and less bulky.

Also. Orvis has a sale going on until midnight tonight on some clearance items if anyone is interested -

I have the the 12 year old version of this sling pack. Works great, fits 3 large fly boxes, an extra reel, 2 extra spools for my reels, and all the extra little bits you need (tippet, leaders, weights, etc.). Mine doesn't have a spot for the water bottle like this one which in some situations would be nice to have.

That's the one I've been looking at and probably end up getting. I need some room for a few things and need some water for sure because I'll walk the river for hours and hours and end up miles from where I started.

Its a great pack for sure and I can vouch for its durability. I've put it through a lot over the years and its still holding up well.

All this talk about packs, all I can think about is baby back ribs and a 12 pack.

    Carry on.
