I cut some wires here. Added some wires there.
What kind of surf casting? Are you lobbing 3oz plugs or 8oz and a bunker head? Off a jetty? Or off the beach?

What could happen to it? I'm more likely to break something on my truck.

I use a Daiwa saltiga surf paired up with a 10' Loomis surf rod, but I throw.almost all plugs and tins. Check out the daiwa emcast surf if you're not stuck on Penn.

I has a Penn BTL800 spinning reel with a Quantum 12' pole that came from a combo that had a reel that died; along with a Abu Garcia combo 9fter.

Was looking last year at going to the "dark side" with a heaver :) Ask squatch or chadeo...that's what them use and cast 3 times farther than me  Spend some bucks and practice with that and ur in there.

I bought a cheap Quantum combo for 100 bucks...the reel didn't make it two years  wont do that again. Spend a bit moar and get a good reel and a 12' pole.

Yeah, for launching bait and weight an ugly stick is fine. Paired up with a Penn Sargus or slammer it should last you the rest of.your life. The Sargus weighs a ton though. Using a rod holder on the beach it wont matter but if you do want to throw bucktails for fluke in the summer it tires you out.

x2 on the penn battle series. reels are rock solid.

i dont use them on the beach but out on the boat. held up to a couple 50 pound cobia and more 6+ foot sharks than i can count last season. still look and perform like brand new. GREAT reels, good price.

I have a Penn Sargus myself its been a good reel so far.

But yea id go with the Ugly Stik too. I like Quantums Boca reels as well although dont have one of those on a surf setup.

if I was looking for a heaver I'd buy one used on a surf fishing forum... a lot of guys buy high end and then get away from bait fishing, so you can get a nice deal on say a rainshadow or lamiglas in barely used condition. What you'll gain in performance would be weight savings and sensitivity, they wouldn't necessarily cast any farther than a 12' ugly stik but they would be a lot more sensitive and fun to fish..

Off the shelf you can get a pretty decent rod for the money with Ocean Master (sold at bass pro), Tica or Tsunami rods. I'd get those before the ugly stik

now for freshwater and some boat rods, you can't beat ugly stiks
