Silverbacks Tacoma Evolution

How she sits today

Future paint scheme.. thanks to Tigerfan!

But it started in Feb of 07 with a stock TRD OffRoad 4x4 double cab with 11 miles on it. It came with the tow package, a gulf states option package 'D'. I had the dealer install Classic Soft Trim leather in a color a little darker than what the port leather option was.

After owning about 2 months the factory stereo had to go. I picked up an Alpine DVD headunit ( no monitor.. what was I thinking ), two Alpine PDX amps, 600.1 and a 4.150, MB Quart QSD 5.25/tweets and the 6.5 Add-a-woofer along with 2 10" Image Dynamic subs. 5.25 and tweets went into Q-Logic kickpanels, 6.5's in the front doors and the amps and subs behind rear seat. Everything got a layer of Dynamat Extreme, some got two.

It saw duty as a tow vehicle for a brief period , pulling our 23' travel trailer. It did well. Only modification I did for that was install Firestone Airbags. Not installed in the picture though.

Figured I needed a transmission temp gauge for towing so I installed a A-pillar pod and put two Autometer gauges, an oil pressure and a transmission temp. Scangauge II above rear view mirror handles the rest.

Enough with the factory suspension. Time for a set of OME Dakars and OME shocks out back along with OME 885's and 140 shocks up front and a 1/2 Toytec spacer. Even though I installed Total Chaos UCA's I still installed Spidertrax spacers just to give the truck a little wider stance. Factory TRD OR wheels with Firestone Destination MT 285/75/16 rubber wrapped around them, including spare. At this time my Rocktec rear bumper came in so it got installed as well. To prevent unwanted vibes a Tom Woods CV driveshaft was installed. Goodridge SS brake lines where also installed.
http://www.wheelersoffroad.com/05upometaco.htm

A UWS black chest holds my recovery gear - this is an old pic... there's more gear.. its a sickness

I was on a mission to remove chrome so I replaced the grill surround and installed a Grillcraft mesh grill. I also debadged it adding a single UT Longhorn to the tailgate (good for 10 horse ). I installled an AllPro front bumper and full set of skid plates. Front IFS, transmission, t-case/exhaust skid as well as the new style e-locker skid. PIAA 510 SMR lights fill the holes in the bumper.
http://www.allprooffroad.com/05tacomatrailarmor

BudBuilt fuel tank skid completes the under armor. http://www.budbuilt.com/new/05+Tacoma.html

Time for a winch. I went with a Warn, I wanted something I could count on when I needed it. I picked up an M8000 along with 100' of Masterpull Superline with the safety hook. http://www.masterpull.com/item.cfm?itemid=46478 Its awesome stuff!! For extra protection I covered the last 20' of line with holow nylon webbing to prevent sun damage. The solenoid box I mounted under the hood to protect it from the elements as well.
Before the winch was going on I figured it would be a good time to upgrade to 886 coils in preparation for the extra weight.

Now that I had all 4 sides with the ability to utilize a jack I picked up a HiLift Extreme. Its mounted on the hi-lift mounts in the bed, large aluminum strips behind the bolts prevent it from cracking the bed. A Slee Offroad Jack-Off tool helps me.. uhhh.. jack the truck from any side. http://www.sleeoffroad.com/products/...kof_detail.htm Also visible is the Toyota rubber bed mat and extra D rings. I added 4 extras in each bedbolt.

A must have for wheeling is a CB, so that was next. A Midland handheld unit was chosen. I can take it out and plug in a small antenna and a battery pack and now its a portable. I installed a 12 volt outlet in the console to power it. It tucks into the side when not in use. A tunable 4' Firestik Firefly with a Firestik mount (cut down to look better) and a Firestsick QD to allow me to back in the garage quietly.. without the antenna smacking the door.

By this time it was too tall to use my load equalizing hitch. Between the Rocktec bumper relocating the hitch to the middle of the bumper and the lift I just couldn't find a drop shank long enough. So we picked up a new tow vehicle, hello 2008 V8 4Runner.

Done for a bit

The rocks haven't been nice to my wheels.. or maybe I haven't been nice to them . They looked bad.

After talking with Tigerfan as to what paint he used I decided to give it a shot. Sanded them down real nice with a sander and then hit them with Rustoleum Hammer finish black. They turned out better than I expected.

Since my winch solenoid box was under the hood it was great to protect it.. however it was not so fun when I needed to use it. Sure on a flat surface its no problem... but when you are off camber and need to pop the hood.. etc etc.. not fun. So I picked up a in-cab winch controller / dual battery control setup from 12VoltGuy.com. Thing is super cool.. top notch! I want to eventually build a nice panel that fits where it is now, just looks nicer. For now it works though. http://12voltguy.com/web/index.php?p...mart&Itemid=43

Picked up a Bracketron holder for my iPhone.

After reading on another board that the new Sears DieHard Platinum batteries are the same thing as an Odyssey I decided to pick up two for my dual battery setup. They are the equivalent to a PC1750 and a PC1500MT.

I also built a holder for my Blue Seas fuse holder, the dual battery solenoid and teh fuse holder for the stereo. I got the ground wires tidied up pretty nicely but I'm waiting on some parts to finish the positive side.

I mounted the second battery in the toolbox. I went with a Summit NHRA approved battery box. 1 gauge cable connects the battery from the front. A 200 AMP fuse prevents any damage should the cable ground out. The second fuse holder is for the on-board air.

The item on the right is my on-board air compressor. Its an Oasis HP1000. http://www.parksoffroad.com/prodrevi...asis/oasis.htm I've got it mounted on custom mounts that are rubber isolated to prevent vibration. It has a pressure switch to automatically shut off and a 1.5 gallon tank underneath to add a little extra storage. I have a 25' coiled hose that allows me to get all 4 tires, the compressor can put out 9CFM so running air tools is no problem. I still want to clean up the wiring a little better and I need to build a divider for the compressor, so nothing inadvertently touches the thing when its running since it gets so hot.

Finally got around to doing a BHLM as I'm waiting on my HID's lights to come in. Also added some Sockmonkey black and gray TRD decals for the bedsides.

That's it for now. Future mods will include replacing the ID subs with JL Audio TW5's. Might add a 3rd PDX amp when I do that. Also would like to put some 8 or 9" speakers in doors, move the 6.5's to the rear doors for fill. The biggie though will be a front ARB locker and a re-gear. I'd like to do 4.10 or 4.30's.. but they are very $$. I can buy a complete set of 4.56 gears for the price of one 4.10 or 4.30 gearset. We'll see.

thanks guys. I took it out wheeling today. Got to test out new on-board air setup. I aired up 6 tires in the time it took my bro-in-law to air up 1.5 with his MasterFlo MF1050. I still need to adjust the pressure switch, I feel its set too low. But it worked great.

Also got to test out my sliders in a different way. My BIL's Jeep was parked on a hill. We got out to check out a trail. We look back and its heading toward my truck!! Nobody at the wheel.. slam! I expected the worst.

Luckily he had just put those steel fenders on, so the lack of a flare prevented it from getting into my door! Just rolled along the slider. Thanks Shrockworks, once again you have proven yourself worth every penny spent.

I told him I was going to give him a set of wheel chocks. It could have been worse. If the truck wasn't there it was headed toward a 200' drop into a canyon. Pretty sure the trees would have stopped it at some point.
