I am wondering if i should buy a 1996 Toyota Tacoma 3.4L V6 or the same exact truck in a 4 cylinder. i need something reliable and thats not gonna break on me in the woods. power would be nice but not a neccesity. reliability is the whole thing.... opinions??
thanks Derek |

yeah, my brothers have 3.4L V6's. My brothers 4Runner has 128-130K miles and he drives his car rough and that 3.4L still drives smoothly has a shit ton of power and sounds strong. Besides you will want the extra power
My other brother has a 3.4L with a CAI and exhaust in his taco with 85K and that thing is awesome. you swap the engines of the 4Runner and the tacoma and add the mods of the tacoma onto the 4Runners engine and they will drive the same. They are strong engines and dont ask for much

sure thing, the 3.4L in my brothers 4Runner has been thru alot, car wreck, long driving, hard driving, driven on a seized up transmission etc

The V6 will always be more gutsy over a 4cyl. The 3.4 has alot of pep in it. they will move

Are you familiar with the frame rust warrantee? I wouldn't buy the truck until you have it inspected....at a Toyota dealer.

no prob bro, happy to help ya out. But compared to my 4.0 its a different feel. My neighborhood is built on a ridge and out entrance is on a steep hill so when leaving the entrance and going up the hill you will need to put a good amount of gas down to get going quickly, i mean it wont throw your head back when doing that but if you want to get going on a hill you will have to put the hammer down but i wouldnt recommend flooring it, putting the hammer down or hitting the gas pretty hard will put you in your seat pretty good. If you want to get an extra boost out of the 3.4 there is a ECT button which will change the way the transmission shifts i think, but when pushing that you will fell a great change in pick up and HP, but i would not recommend having that on all the time, it will use up more gas and its unnecessary to make the engine work harder when its got plenty of power. the 3.4L V6 has i think 183 HP, i know that doesnt sound much but it feels like more than that when behind the wheel. My brother with the 4Runner like i said, is rough on his car, and everytime he visits from Charleston i always asks how the 4Runner is running and he says great. plus when hes traveling a long way back to Charleston he sometimes does 100+ and he says it has no problem reaching that speed. I show you a video or my brothers Tacoma with the 3.4L with a CAI and catback exhaust. just so you can get a feel of what your going to get but minus the upgraded parts

This is my brothers truck, minus the 20inch rims. on the drive bys he wasnt hitting the gas hard. but when i was in the truck thats when he put the hammer down, he was going 20 i think when he started and when he punched it we shot up to 50 i think. The 3.4L is a great engine, but it depends on what you need it for, if you like to haul ass everyday then you might want to consider some upgrades for the engine, but you drive it like normal and you punch it on occasion then youll be fine but you should pick up a K&N air filter just for an extra umph
you can also see me holding the camera get thrown back into the seat when he guns it, also in the video you can see the hill i live off of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HECRFJRtcQ
