I've never totally understood the conspiracy theories that follow every single piece of legislation that has any sort of control of anything defined in it. Most people will never use there rights (American) or privileges (Canadian) to free speech other than to bitch about things they likely know very little about. The odds the the government really wants to control anything else other than your votes is very very small. That being said I haven't followed C-51 very closely, but I'm sure if there is enough feedback changes will be made since it is likely going to be an election year.

    their

It's not a conspiricy theory to point out and / or question perceived flaws in a bill , that's pretty much the whole idea of debating it in Parliament .

and you obviously haven't been following it because there are lots of academics , lawyers and current and former MP's calling for changes and more debate

Whoa guys, I was just saying that in general the legislation that is supposed to take away all of our rights and privileges never ends up amounting to anything in most peoples daily lives.

I never said it's not a good idea to care or have a well balanced system of government (checks and balances, etc.). I'm simply stating that these things often get blown out of proportion. Also I would expect there will be some changes to this bill before it passes if so many academics and other significant thinkers feel that there should be changes given that it is an election year. Either way it seems like a null argument considering the real effect of this bill will be marginal if anything. On top of that a left government is probably just around the corner so I would expect a lot of these sort of bills to get revoked just like what the conservatives did to the long gun debacle.

Nope, I wasn't. I've been traveling for work for the last week and busy with getting things organized for the week before that. I also spent most of the last 48 hours with my wife in the hospital while she experienced false labour.

So give me a bit of a break if I don't know everything that's going on and decided to make a general statement because nothing that is happening has effected my daily life one bit .

Ah, so what I'm gathering is that the bill allows for an overpowered, nearly omnipotent, CSIS with not enough oversight? Sounds like the FBI under Hoover.

I've often toyed with the idea in my head of breaking up the RCMP into two agencies. One for common civil and legal law enforcement (keep it the RCMP) and one for organized crime in general (a sort of Canadian FBI). Right now, when I talk to ex-RCMP, they talk about the whole organization being confused and often to big to have clear on the ground long term goals. Maybe instead of making a SUPER CSIS which sounds like a bad idea the Conservatives could of created a new agency? Gave it some of the RCMP budget and some of it's own?

Snow blower broke today, shovelled 30cm or so by hand then did the elderly neighbour.

Terrible weather and higher taxes, what else could you ask for!?

.....I'm moving to BC, need a rented OZ?

Of course it's lower in nunavut. The government forced the people to live in communities rather than camps as late as the 60s only to secure sovereignty from Russia. People are practically held there against their will using tactics you would only see in 3rd world countries. If taxes were high up there the people would starve worse than they already do.......Oh Canada. Rant over.
