Moving to Calgary from Houston

Just got word today at work I am being transferred to Calgary which is a good thing but I just bought a 2009 Tacoma about a month ago. I am still unsure whether the company will provide me a vehicle for the few years I am there, since I am a US expat, or if I will be able to bring my truck. Anyone have any experience with bringing a truck to Canada from the US? If I can bring my truck are there any heaters to keep the oil from freezing or anything like that that would need to be done to the truck. Rough estimates on cost would also be appreciated. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

you can get a block heater, they are just under $100 from a dealer in Canada and pretty simple to install yourself. You could order one while you are still in the US for a lot less $$$$$

My truck still starts in -20 or colder without being plugged in overnight... it just doesn't like it too much.

Are you going to try register the truck in Canada or just keep it registered in the US?

Welcome! I live in Calgary. Wicked place to be, nothing says kick ass like being 45minutes from the mountains. All you'll need is a block heater. You can do the Day time Running lights mod on here for the cheap. Your speedo should already have Km/h on it. Other then that, you should be good.

I've started my truck in -40C without being plugged in. As was stated, it still runs, it just gets mad at you for the first 5 minutes of driving.

Just traded 8 months of summer for 8 months of winter but you won't have to worry about hurricanes, blizzards instead. Enjoy the socialism, we'll be there shortly if amabo (spelled backwards to match his nonthinking bullshit) has his way.

Thanks for the information guys.

I am still unsure whether I will register my truck in Canada or not. I am assuming if I live there for 3 or 4 years I will have to.

Another quick question (forgive my ignorance I have never been to Calgary) If I get an apartment, which I assume will have a heated garage, will they be long enough for my double cab long bed?

If you financed the truck I'd check with the bank that holds the lein to make sure they'll allow you to take it up there. Same for your insurance company, make sure they will cover you up there for the entire time or modify your coverage.

Yeah no, that sucks. I don't like having the weather go from +20C to just under freezing in 15 minutes. Boo!

That and paying half a million for a 900 square foot condo. Kiss my ass.

Depends on where you're going to rent. If it's underground parkade style, I've seen double cab full size domestics park there.

But I've also seen some that can barely house a civic.

just a couple things to add.
its calgary not Iqaluit (capital of nunavut which is the most northern territory in Canada). it wont be that freakin cold. you should switch to synthetic oil though. (if you haven't already) as it deals with the cold better then conventional. a block heater is a good idea.

It can get that cold. Does it frequently? No. But it can. Generally winter is here is about -25C during the main freeze.

Currently we're roasting at +25C today.

Oh, and it's super fuck ass dry here. Just to let you know. Humidity is a myth.

Hahaha spot on my friend. Calgary isn't that bad. The chinook winds will keep you nice and warm. A block heater is all you really need...and a command start isn't a bad idea either! Might
