Help! Rubbing compound mistake!!

I've got a 2010 Tacoma Access Cab in metallic gray magnetic. Tried to take care of some minor scratches with wax and polish. That didn't help so I moved up to Turtle Wax rubbing compound. That seemed to take the scratches out but unfortunately it removed the clear coat shine with it. Tried the recommended Turtle Wax Hard Shell wax afterwords but there is still a dull spot where the rubbing compound did its thing.

What can I do to fix this situation? Clear coat spray, another wax and elbow grease? Take it to the pros?

Clearly I'm a bit clueless. I know it would have been much better to try this out on an out of the way spot before trying it on the 8-10 obvious places. Though I'd used rubbing compound a few years ago without any trouble.

Please help me rectify things. Any and all suggestions are appreciated!!

With rubbing compound you basically sanded your paint. You are going to need to go to a finer compound/polishing compound/very fine wet sand and then buff the hell out of it after that to get back your shiney.

 

i use this to take buff with if I use 2000 grit sand paper on my paint

its great and super easy to use

It is a self deminishing compound, basically its starts out at its harshest and the more you work it in the finer it gets. so its like using multiple levels of cut in one application

Thanks guys! I'm feeling better that I didn't do some major damage. Guess my buffing muscles are going to get a workout.

Look for white polishing compound instead of rubbing compound

 

So it sounds like this is a good thread to ask another question without starting another one. I was off roading and scratched up my truck. I used the same rubbing compound you did and it didn't do the job of removing the scratches but also didn't take the clear coat off. So am I not rubbing hard enough or what?

Use a high-quality microabrasive polish like one of CSI's...or Meguiar's M105/M205.
