DIY:Cleaning Scratches/ Faded Headlights

Ok so as headlights wear and tear they you tend to see specs and scratches even a yellowing of the headlight housing. Heres a diy to remove that.



Sand the sctatch out with the coarse sand paper grit 1500.

Then sand out the sanding scratches by using a
2000 grit wet sandpaper



This stage is very important, use lots of water and sand all areas that you have sanded with the coarser grits

Now its time to polish

I used a turtle wax headlight rubbing compound bought at autozone

And your DONE!

3M also has a great product that goes on a drill. I did my 10 yr. old Odyssey. Originally I did the manual route with some fine grit paper and then polish all by hand. It was o.k. but started to oxidize again. So, I tried the 3M product and it's great.

 

I own a headlight restoration business. The kits you find at the auto parts store (3M, turtle wax, ect) are a temporary fix at best. In most cases the haze will reappear within a few weeks if a wax or polish is not constantly applied. When you restore a headlight and strip all that yellow/oxidation off, you are stripping off the original UV coating that came on the light from the factory. If that coating is not replaced, you leave the light vulnerable to further damage. A sealant must be used to protect the fresh plastic. I have developed my own sealant, and am in the process of developing a kit for all you DIYers.

 

^^Someone mentioned that to me also (stripping the factory coating). So is there a sealant on the market now that you can recommend or should we just wait on yours ?

 

1500 grit wet, followed by a good micro-abrasive polish (like SYSTEM ONE X3, Meguiar's M205 or CSI Cut N Polish) with a wool pad and rotary and you're done.

Yes, it removes the protective coating but the headlights won't haze up again in a few weeks. Mine lasted about two years before I had to do it again.

You don't need a special headlight polish or headlight kit to get the job done, although headlight kits are handy if you don't have the essentials.

wonder why the manufactures of the these headlight assembly's don't come up with a better product that won't haze over..my gosh....they can put a man like Obama in the white house but they can't come up with better headlights!!!

I think it's called "product obsolesence". Kinda like the headliners that fall off the foam backing in a few years.
The dealers know youll be back for a new one.

I'm sure there are manufacturers out there that sell it, but I mix my own from a few different sealants.
