THE PLASTI-DIP MEGA THREAD!!!!!!

Very nice. I was actually thinking of doing my FJR. Did you tape everything off or did you remove all the panels? Also, is it rattlecan or an actual painters gun? Thanks for any input!

 

Currently in the process of dipping my hood and roof...we'll see how this goes. Pics will follow.

 

i rattle canned it, used a bigger nozzle, and used a spray handle on the can.

i taped everything off (couldnt find my set of screw drivers lol and allen wrenches), wasnt bad at all. i missed one spot a few times so some blue still shows through if you look real closely, and on the front tire cover on the back side the blue is showing because its hard to get a good coat back there.

but not a big deal, ill leave it like this for a few weeks and i want to try an army green or camo brown next

 

Just ordered up a kit to plasti-dip the whole truck. Anyone used, or know where to buy the Plasti Dip Primer?

 

you dont need 'primer', just clean the truck thorougly and strip it of all its wax.

they sell a 'pre dip spray' on their site, but any dish soap will work

I'll start by saying I am not a big DIY type of person. I'd like to think I am the DIY type of person but in all reality I'd rather pay someone to do it right than screw it up myself. With that said I plasti dipped all four wheels and my front emblem yesterday and I could not be more please with the results. I strongly encourage anyone that is on the fence to give it a try. It is virtually impossible to screw up and it is a very cheap $$ fix to an otherwise expensive "problem".

Equipment needed:
Factory or aftermarket jack
Rubbing alcohol to thoroughly clean wheels
Microfiber cloth to properly clean and dry wheels
Plasti Dip

Total time spent - two casual afternoons
Plasti Dip Spray Can (3) - $19.xx
Rubbing alcohol (optional) - $2.49
Total cost - approximately $22.00

I started by releasing the front emblem from my grill by depressing the plastic tabs on the inside of my grill. I then laid the emblem on newspaper on my garage floor. With the garage door open for ventilation I proceeded to apply a light dusting of plasti dip to the emblem giving the emblem about 50% coverage leaving a smoked appearance. I applied an additional 3 coats with a 15 minute wait time between each coat applying the last 3 coats slightly thicker than the first light dusting. After about 45 minutes from the last coat I popped my emblem back in the grill and was finished with the front emblem. The process for the wheels was the same. Using the factory jack I was only able to remove one wheel at a time, each wheel taking me about 2 hours from the point I jacked the truck up and removed, cleaned and plasti dipped the wheel (4 coats with 15 minute wait period between coats) to reinstalling my wheel on the truck with the longest period being about a 45 minute wait to reinstall the tire after the fourth coat. I did one side (2 wheels) one afternoon and knocked the second side (2 wheels) out the next afternoon and waited about 12 hours from the time the last wheel was sprayed before I drove the truck. I think it's amazing what two afternoons and a few cans of plasti dip can do to a truck. Tomorrow I will be doing my rear emblems as well. I could only figure out how to add one photo but I will include other photos on my page including a photo of the wheel plasti dipped with the center cap left silver for anyone that might consider that option.

How many cans of derp will i need to do my wheels, bull bar, lower grill, upper grill, skewp, and westin steps, its a double cab

 

Looks really good I take it you painted the bull bar and didn't derp it?

 

What looks best with plastidip? Matte finish or gloss finish?

 

well thats an opinion, i personally like the matte black over the gloss

Three posts above you I have a pic of the 16 inch steel wheels plasti dipped. I also have a pic on my profile of the center cap left silver which is another option.

 

you guys with Super White Tacomas and black grilles look nice. Check out B.Turner's truck too. color matched is always nice, but the black looks pretty sweet in my opinion.
