Bad Rock Chip

Received this beauty last week on the A pillar. Its deep. can i just use a glazing putty and touch up paint? I'll wetsand it after im done to blend it in.

 

you have to buy a new truck!! there is no way you can fix this lol.

 

That chip is going to get really big once you sand out the paint that's peeling around it. I would recommend taking it to a body shop, and having them fix it properly, otherwise it's going to look like hell after you sand/touch it up.

 

After you do get it fixed, throw some 3M Stone Guard on your pillars.

 

Yeah get that professionally fixed or else its just going to look horrible. Its going to be like 1/2" in diameter once the rest of the paint peels up.

 

Im guessing around 150 but i've never had it done. My truck has been hit with a bb gun right in the passenger side xtra cab. It started peeling like the op's but not nearly as bad so I just put a bunch of touch up paint on there. Looks horrible but its held up for over 2 years now.

 

im sure if you build it up enough and wetsand and compound it then it will look fine.

 

And you may be right... Asking someone else what will look good is a very subjective question. If you're happy with sanding it out, putty, touch up, and compounding it, then by all means, do so. Just realistically this repair is going to be pretty big when you're done, and if it's on the driver's side, it's all you're going to see every time you open your door. Personally, I wouldn't be able to live with that, but I'm anal as hell when it comes to paint repairs.

 

Yeah i know it will look okay enough, i just am unsure whether or not i can use a glazing putty or if i need bondo.

 

Given the size, you'll need 2-part putty. I don't think a glazing putty will do the trick once you sand it all out. Plus, glazing putty tends to shrink, which will make your repair look terrible, while 2-part holds it's shape better.

I try not to use glazing putty on anything bigger than a small rock chip. If I do, it's usually visible.
