Remove spilled paint from my hood?

What kind of paint, just plain old latex interior type paint or overspray from some other application?

 

I'm not a detailer and, since you have a black truck, I'd wait for one to chime in because stuff will show up on your black paint that won't show on other colors.

If it's a fine mist across the hood, I'd use claybar (or for interior latex, a plain wash might do the trick).

Assuming the wash doesn't work, if it's a few drops, I'd go with a soft rag with some acetone (just enough to do the job, not a dripping wet rag).

If you use acetone, I'd try it on the inside of a fender flare first, just to make sure what you're using won't mess with the paint. I've used it on mine before and it didn't do anything but I have a white truck. You'd also have to re-wax because the acetone will strip the wax from your truck.

 

Water based or oil based?

 

gasoline........put it on a rag wipe(dont scrub) it off, then apply a good sealant or wax.

 

i have the perfect stuff. . . cant remember the name.

will look for it at work today. . we had a crew spraying some silver rustoleom paint on some metal structures at work one day and the wind carried off a bunch of specs and it got on a lot of employees cars, like 20 of them. we were afraid we'd have to pay to have all of them repainted. got this stuff from a detail shop that gets it off without damaging the clear coat. maybe someone could help me out, i know it comes in a metal can, bout a gallon and the brand starts with and "E". . .it's killing me right now not being able to remember, but i'll try and find a can at work when i go back in a minute.

but anyway, we would just put some on a shop rag, wipe the cars down, and then pressure wash from a little distance away. cars looked like it never happened.

 

x2, that works pretty well with removing interior paint.

 

yeah if its water based just use water and a good quality microfiber towel to scrub it off.

and if water doesn't do it try WD-40. Just wash it off after you use it.

On the can of WD-40 it's got written on it that it takes bugs and tar off and it does a fine job at it, but with any petrol based product wash it off before it eats the paint.


I would stay away from harsh chemicals that the others have said.

Dont use gas on Latex paint.. IT WILL MELT THE PAINT, use good ole soap and water..If that does not work use some OPPS or GOOF OFF..

All these ideas are great. Getting paint off of paint without hurting your paint is tough. If its water based, then soak it with water for as long as possible. Then get a towel, a plastic scraped, gasoline, rubbing alchohol, and some drinking alchohol as well. Try getting at it with the plastic scraper first, then try the rest. Good luck

 

I wouldn't use a plastic scrapper...

 

Gasoline isn't a harsh chemical, on car paint. You can use it as long as you wash it and put a coat of wax on the spot that you cleaned it with. I have done this a numerous amount of times on my own vehicles and on my customers vehicles. I explain to my customers that it WILL need to be waxed if I do it though because it strips the wax off. Everytime I have used it on a customers vehicle they are always calling back and wanting me to clean their cars for them. I don't have to tell them what "chemical" it is either. All I said was it's a "special and expensive chemical" that does the trick if nothing else will work. I of course use it as my last resort though if a claybar doesn't work.
Gasoline won't hurt to use AS LONG AS YOU WASH AND WAX THE SPOT YOU CLEANED WITH IT!!!!
