Is there any reason why I would not want to do this? It sure looks good, but will it cause discoloration or any other problems?

try stoner products.they have tire and trim shine.this stuff is awsome IMO.its silicone base makes for easy mud/coal dirt removal.i spray my fender wells and all with it.deff. makes cleaning a breeze.although it is hard to find.i got a store in my area that carries it.good luck.

i did it before i took the flaps off and liked the look! the only downfall is if you dont wash it for a while it seems that all the dust and whatnot seems to cling to them
