Scratches from a hit and run.

Some jacko sideswiped my truck (my wife doesn't know where exactly) and has some pretty decent scratches along the whole side. I've had the truck almost 2 months and I'm really ticked off. I can't believe much people suck and have no appreciation for things. At least there aren't any dents (I'm really trying to look at the positive, but man it's hard).

Any ideas how to get this out?

I think I would take it and have it detailed by a pro. They won't get out 100 % of the scratches but I bet they will get out more than you or I would get out. They might be able to advise your next step or you may decide it's not so bad and just live with it. Sorry about your truck. Weren't to hard on wifey were you?

 

I'm starting to calm down now but I was going to wash it this weekend and I know it will set me off again. I may take your advice and take it to a local detail shop for their suggestions or drop it for them to do it.

As far as the wifey, I know it wasn't her fault but she really doesn't pay too much attention to other vehicles in parking lots. She did buy me some Samuel Adams summer ale, so I must go crack one open.

 

as long as its only a scratch to the clear coat you can buff it out, maybe further on down the road add another clear coat to that layer so its not so thin.

 

That scratch isn't bad at all. A porter cable buffer will take it right out for sure.

 

I should've clarified, it occured in a parking lot somewhere and she wasn't sure which one.

I was taught that if you want your car/truck to look good for a good long time - park it in the first spot you come across - far from the store that way you get exercise and no door dings.

 

That really sucks man! I know something like that would be hard for me to keep off my mind. Hopefully as you move toward getting those scratches out (And they do look like they can be polished out by a detailer) you will feel a bit better. If and when you get them out, it'd be cool to see before/after pics. posted. Try your best to be actively involved in focusing on something else in the meantime. I know if I dwell on stuff like that it just eats me up and contributes to me having a piss poor attitude & it ain't worth it. Glad to hear you didn't give your wife a hard time about it. Hey, "Shit happens." It can be fixed for sure. Don't let it become a resentment.

 

Sorry to hear this... as you said the positive is no dents but still people don't pay attention or so irresponsible....grrr

It looks like somebody dragged a duffle bag, a huge @ss purse, or those new "green" grocery reuse bags against the whole side of your truck...

As Kenny said, a porter cable will take it out or pay a detailer.

 

Generally, if you slide your fingernail perpendicular to the scratch and it catches, the scratch won't come out. If it doesn't catch, you have a good chance of it coming out.

If the white I'm seeing is a scuff or paint from whatever scratched it, you're in good shape. If that is primer, you're hosed.

It looks like you have a lot of oxidation/water stains on that paint so you'll have to do the whole area (or whole vehicle) or you will have one section that looks like new.

 

My attitude today is better. I'll be taking it to a detailer on Monday. Hopefully it'll turn out better and I'll post pictures.

As for the water spots, it got oversprayed by my sprinkler system that morning. I was going to wash it this weekend but that's not going to happen now.

 

Great news, I got the damage fixed yesterday by my local detailing shop. It really turned out great and gave me the opportunity to completely wax the entire truck last night, got finished around midnight.

I'll post pictures of the areas tonight because I'm not on my computer right now.

Yeah, it's amazing what you can do with a buffer and some knowledge. A friend brought over his Dodge Ram that had tons of scratches and I was able to get a majority out with my PC 7424. Now if I knew what I was really doing I could be dangerous.
