guys I used a claybar kit for the first time on my truck and holy crap did it work. Take the backside of your finger and rub it on your recently washed truck. If you feel little tiny bumps or imbedments you have to use this stuff. After I was done the paint felt like silk. Not to mention the truck shined like never before. takes some time and you have to use some sort of spray detailer with it but you will be pleased. my 2 cents.

If you place your hand in a plastic sandwich baggie the imperfections in the surface are even more pronunced.

I like Clay Magic as well. Good stuff.

Also if you run out of lubricant some distilled water in a spray bottle with 2 to 3 drops of a dish washing detergent will work just as well.

It depends how careful you are and how bad the paint is. Really bad paint requires more passes to make it perfectly smooth.

I would estimate in the neighborhood of 15-30 minutes, including cleanup. Don't forget to wax when you're done.

x2. I use the clay after I wash each part of the truck. The soapy water works fine.

As polishandwax.com mentioned it's pretty quick. Considering how much good you're doing for your paint it's time well spent. Keep in mind unless you are a complete detail nut you don't need to clay after every wash.

OP, so what's next for you? Polish?

I clayed my new 09' after only a month or so of owning. Hands down it was night and day difference. I love the feeling of the paint being like that of glass after it has been freshly clayed. :)

I dunno about everyone else but I definitely couldn't do it in 15-30 minutes like someone else posted. I'm just too picky for one and I like to really take my time when I'm putting the clay to use. I would say it would definitely take an hour or more to do a DC.

The time it takes to claybar is nothing considering you only need to clay 2-3x/ year. Any more frequently and you actually damage your clear-coat.

It takes me about 1 hour with my M3 and about 2 hours with the Truck.

After you claybar your paint/clearcoat is bare and unprotected from the elements, so you need to apply a wax afterwards. Don't forget about that last step. Cheers.

What brand do you suggest. The local car stores carry clay bars. Does the brand matter? What do you like?

Like I said, it really depends how trashed it is (and of course the size of the vehicle matters too). I could easily do my truck in 15 minutes, but it doesn't need it too badly.

Also, if you have dark paint and are trying to be careful not to scratch, it will take longer. If you are planning on polishing anyway, then you don't care about minor scratches and you will cruise through it.

Side panels tend to go much faster because they don't collect as much bonded contaminants*, so on a truck, the tougher panels are the roof and the hood. If you have a sunroof (like I do), the roof area needing clay is now roughly half the size.

    * I've seen some weird stuff happen on tailgates, depending on the vehicle and exhaust pipe location. So your tailgate might have a lot of bonded contaminants, but mine doesn't collect them there.

The CSI Q-7 Clay we sell works nicely, but the Clay Magic Perfect Finish Kit is really a steal because it comes with a 100g clay bar and a bottle of lubricant. Last time I was in Autozone, its was $11.99.
