Quick engine detailing question

Read all the threads about washing down and detailing the engine compartment. Got the stuff to do it. Is it done with the engine cover on or off? Sorry about the noob question but thanks.

 

off because you dont want to soak the insulation under the panel

 

I broke the cover (well cracked it, but I will plastic weld it) and I clean it with it off.

Thanks folks it worked without a hitch. Washed and CD2ed the wife's Xterra too.

That's what I used. Diluted 1:1 with water. Probably could have diluted it more because there was no leaky oily stuff other than where I missed the oil filler when I last topped it off. Mostly just dust and dirt. Cleaned the engine cover separately.

Set the hose to medium sized fan and sprayed it down. Turned on the engine to help it dry some and used a blower attachment on my air compressor to blow excess water off where it tended to puddle.

CD2ed the engine compartment per instructions. Reinstalled the engine cover, CD2ed that. Done!
