burned through the clear coat

Pretty sure I burned the clear coat with a 2000 grit piece of sandpaper in about 7 strokes trying to smooth out some touch up paint. Now I have an estimated $700.00 repair bill. Can I just put touchup back on the spot and put clear coat on top it then sand it down?

 

if your not sure why dont you get some compound and work it in with buffer or elbow grease followed by a polish. 7 strokes seems not enough to cause major damage. post a pic.

 

Take a towel and some polish and rub on the spot where you sanded. If you get paint on your towel the color of your truck, your clear coat is compromised. If not use the polish to remove the sanding scratches.

 

ok guys thanks for the info. The paint place said I burned through it because it had a very very thin clear coat. I will try the towel method when I get home. I really cant believe this is happening that was 700 towards my wheels and tires!

 

good luck. hopefully it polishes out. seems unlikely 7 strikes would cut thru clear coat. let us know.

 

How big is the spot? You can get touch up clear coat to touch it up. (You will have to sand that down after it is dry, but if you are carefull it will be okay)

 

Boerseun its a pretty big spot and that is what I did today I put clear coat on it and its now drying going to sand it down tomorrow and see where I am at. It cant really look any worse at this point. Just trying to make it look like something that is reasonable that people arn't going to stare at. I will try to get some pics of it tomorrow
