Good advice from above.....What about stopping into a Firehouse in your City and asking the crew on duty. Most guys and gals welcome the respectful inquiries from someone who admires what they do.

I don't chime in to often but thought I might. Yota if you want wildfires I suggest somewhere west of the rocky mountains either with the USFS on an engine or a hotshot crew. I am getting ready for my 3 season with CALFIRE and i love it. I go to school and work at the same time so it is difficult but do able. Education is essential these days. I know for the unit I work for they received 1300 applications for maybe 22 positions. If your in a location that has a Volunteer Dept. Try to get hooked with them. Stay proactive and don't get in trouble with the law.

yea. im trying to do something similar with the school and firefighting during the season. as for out west, ive applied to practically every location that offers housing since i would be from out of town. i plan on going to school in CO in the off season with the money from the GI Bill after the Army. also i do plan on getting on with voluteer dept as well. i just hope everything works out for me and can get accepted to the college i want. question though? you said don't get in trouble with the law. now what if i was in trouble over six years ago. would that dequalify me?

Not always. I got a DUI prior to my involvement with the fire service. If it came down to it and the department did not want hire because of it then most likely the department is not one I would want to work for. People know that mistakes happen. It is how you handle yourself once you realize you want to be involved in the fire service. My run in with the law was before I had any involvement or any idea this would be my career. Does this make sense?

yeah, in most fire dept's you will be lower than whaleshit for a while, no matter what degree or level of certification you come in with. That is one way that the fire service is different than a lot of jobs, you have to put in some time and earn respect to move up in rank.:)

It just depends...I have noticed that most departments will hire people with a prior DUI or something on that level. I imagine there are past offenses where one would be better off not wasting their time trying.

Yeah, thats how it was for me, I don't know if most fire departments are like that or not?

It wasn't like that at all for me, I did the stuff anyway and I think it helped me get accepted and welcomed, but no one ever forced me or treated me like shit.

It will depend on the dept and how traditional they are most likely. Either way after a year or so (if they like you) you'll probably find yourself fitting right in.

im at a volly dept right now hoping to get hired in the near future testing all over. but it is deff based on the dept and how traditional they are. my buddy works for the city of orlando and the guys in the station that were on other engines wouldnt even talk to him untill he got his first fire. its all diferent and as is the schooling by state to state. getting a job right now is not the easiest and even tougher with so many people trying and soo little jobs open. miami had over 2000 people camping out for a week last month to get applications, they only gave out 700 to the first people.....

ye close to 900 members and the lowest iaff number in the state of texas (well originally, i think dallas resigned theirs then got it back but we never left the brotherhood!) we are an ISO class 1 rated fire dept and keep about 87% of fires contained to the room of origin running only 3 man crews..yeah that's right, 3 to a pumper (engine) ladder(truck) or the quints! we have our own ambulance service that we jump back and forth on and they run 2 man crews(one paramedic and one basic or intermediate) we have 3 shifts and while it's pretty traditional, it's just a matter of proving yourself to guys, everyone has been there before
