It used to be that when towing a trailer, you had to replace the standard turn signal flasher with a heavy duty one to prevent the turn signals from flashing too fast. From what I've been able to figure out so far, however, the factory tow package on my 2010 is set up so that's not necessary. Indeed, I'm not sure the "flasher" is even the simple plug in unit that it was on older vehicles. Am I correct?

Picked up my buddy's 18' featherlite car trailer yesterday. Had to tow my neighbor's daughter's car (99 monte carlo) this morning about 25 miles. her serpentine belt broke, and the new one I put on didn't seem to want to stay on the pulley straight, I think the idler pulley is bad.

Later on this evening I have to drive to the ghetto in south atlanta to tow my buddy's 91 MR2 Turbo back from the shop that just finished a 3rd gen 3SGTE swap in it. He doesn't have insurance or a tag and the rear wheel bearing is bad so he doesn't feel comfortable driving it back. Its about 40 miles from there back up to canton.

Towing the monte carlo wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I would have to guess around 5000-5500 lbs. The trailer weighs 1800 (gotta love all aluminum) and the car probably 3000-3500. With the monte carlo on it this morning it squatted quite a bit at first but once I got the car centered up on the trailer it sat a lot more even. It definitely takes a lot more to stop it since I dont have the trailer brakes wired. Mine is a 2007 6spd.

Here's a pic of the truck hooked up to the trailer, the trailer, and the lowrider pic from two weeks ago when I had the bed loaded up with 30 bags of mulch. It was sitting on the bump stops with that mulch in the back.

I want to do more track days next year, so I bought an '06 Prerunner to haul my street bike 400 miles to the track. I'm a total newb when it comes to trucks, and I jumped in without doing much research :D . Now that I'm already committed, I'm wondering if this will work for me? I made some guesses and came up with these numbers:

bike: 400 lbs

driver & passenger: 300 lbs

full tank of gas: 130 lbs

"stuff": 340 lbs (tools, gear, stands, cooler, camera, etc.)

That puts me right under 1200 lbs. Is that going to work? I don't have a trailer, and I was trying to avoid on altogether, but I never considered the total amount that I wanted to haul. Feel free to remind me how foolish that was ;)

Trailer lights failing every year

Ok, so I have had my '04 Tacoma since November of 2003. I tow a snowmobile trailer all winter long, and it seems every year I am replacing my trailer light harness. Is there a company that makes a better harness? I was having a garage install one every year, but then realized it was the same thing I could buy for $38 at Advanced Auto Parts. It takes about 20 minutes to install, so i do it myself now.

But without fail, and usually not much more than a year after I install it, all my lights fail. The only fix seems to be taking the harness with the little converter box out of the system. It usually happens when I am a couple hundred miles from home.

So does anyone know what is failing? Is it the little converter box? Is there a company that makes a bombproof harness? I don't mind spending more money if the harness lasts longer. Nothing sucks more than having all the lights fail on a snowy mountain road hauling a loaded trailer. Should I try and waterproof the converter box better? I was thinking of mounting a little dry box and putting the box inside that.

Any suggestions are welcome. Maybe I just need to carry a spare harness with me and the tools to install it on the side of the road. What a PITA.

I'm a noob here, trying to learn about my taco, but I've lurked for a few months. Great group here, super informative.
I am towing a single-axle, 6' x 6' x 12' long, V-nose Featherlite enclosed trailer with a total weight of 4,400lbs, with about 500lbs on the front. Friction-type sway control is installed. I just finished my first trip and I've got a few questions I didn't find when searching:
1) The truck handled the weight fine, power was ok. Shifting didn't seem right. On cruise, the tranny would downshift on small grades. When I drove without cruise, I could easily hold speed with minimal accelerator pedal movement without the tranny downshifting. By driving like this, I could go a long way with some sizeable grades maintaining 75 mph and the tranny would never have to downshift. Then I'd punch in the cruise and I would get one, and sometimes two downshifts on similar grades, then it would "hang" at high rpms for quite a ways past the crest of the hill, at the pre-set speed. I ended up not using cruise at all. Is there any fix for this ?
2) Anybody towing with a supercharger ? Did the re-flash help the shifting, or did the additional power just let the truck stay in higher gears ? I got about 10mpg on the trip, would the S/C make this better, worse, same???
3) Are there any published dyno charts showing stock HP and Torque, vs supercharged HP and Torque across the rpm range ?
4) Any other reco's for more towing power, better mileage, better shifting?

I just got a dual cab 2010 Tacoma w/tow package a couple of weeks ago and am loving it.

With the inlcuded backup camera, I've been able to get rid of the telescoping tennis balls for hitching up :)

Has anyone thought about installing a second camera on the back of the trailer and then installing a switch near the tow harness so that once you're connected to the trailer you could switch the camera to the one on the back of the trailer?

Anyone know if the Gentex Mirror can handle the LCD display being on continually rather than just when you're in reverse? (it would be nice to by-pass the display working in reverse only when you're towing so you could always see behind you).

I will be receiving my 07 SR5 Tacoma in a few weeks and I noticed that it doesn't come with the trailer 4 pin wiring connector. I will want to put one of those on there, does anybody have the wiring diagram to which wires to connect the turn signals, park light, etc? Which color of wires on the tail lights?

I know there are some wiring units you can buy for the Tacoma, but I don't see the point in those especially since you can simply tap in those tail light wires.

I will be moving in January and I need some advice. I have a 05 4x4 SR5 with out the towing package. I want to add a hitch and the 4 pin plug for the trailer lights.

I have been looking at these hitches. http://www.etrailer.com/hitch-2005_Toyota_Tacoma.htm Is there any real difference between them? This site also has a plug and play 4 pin setup.

I plan on moving a 400# motorcycle in the bed of the truck and towing a small trailer with typical bedroom furniture. Its only one bedroom worth of stuff, not the whole house.

Will I be good with this setup?

Hey folks!

First off - thanks for a great site. This place is awesome and has been sooooo useful to me over the past few months as I was decided whether to get a trailer for my truck, and what kind, size, etc. I ended up buying a 6' x 12' enclosed trailer in August to haul my bikes to/from the track, the shop, etc. (Truck, by the way, is a 1998 2.4L Tacoma. Manual transmission, 137k miles. Not sure what else is pertinent info for y'all.)

I've put about 3k miles on the truck/trailer since getting it. (Loaded, the trailer runs ~2200 - ~2800lbs, depending on how many bikes I put in. 99% of the time, though, just one bike so 2200lbs.) Recently took the truck in to have the tires balanced, and the technician mentioned the brake pads were pretty worn. Fair enough - I get to do a brake job on the truck this weekend. Yay. BUT... it got me thinking:

Is there any special maintenance that I need to do to the truck to keep him (yes, my truck is a 'he'. His name is 'Snort' - which is 7-year-old for 'Stuart'. ;D) happy now that his 4 cylinders are actually having to do some work?

Do I want to change the oil more often? Anything I need to be aware of with the (manual) tranny? Tires? (Hey, speaking of tires: I typically run 'em at 34psi - is that good for when they are under load, or do I want to over/under-inflate them a bit?) What else?

Sorry if the question has been asked (I did search!), and thanks in advance for any advice you can offer!
