Since high school I have known that I would go 1 of 2 paths after finishing college. Either education, or law enforcement. Long story short I have decided that going back to college and finishing is not quite as doable as I had hoped and after a long hard thought process over the last few weeks I have decided to start applying with various police departments.

Now for the advice I seek. I know there are several people in this forum who have found a very rewarding career in law enforcement. Is there any knowledge you could share with me as I enter the application process? I go in for a physical and written test with the city of Salem, OR police department in a few weeks.

Your advice will be graciously noted.

Thanks,
Jeff

hey all,

seeing as both my wife and i are losing our jobs here shortly, we dont really have a strong connection to southern californina (LA). so, we were considering the possibility of relocating to another part of the country. we really dont care where, but we just want a change and to get out of LA.

so, the question is; in your opinion, where are good places around the country that have computer-type technical jobs, in affordable, safe areas, and where the land isnt fully developed so you dont feel like you are in a concrete jungle? (wow... does that even exist?)

i have heard that some areas like austin, texas or seatle, washington are nice. any places in oregon or maybe other coastal states? i know i wont make the same salary moving outside of LA, but then again, the cost of living is usually less once you leave LA anyway. (if i was offered the same, however, i wouldnt pass it up :))

thanks in advance for your thought and input.

Came into work today and my boss came by and said "Got a minute". I get shuttled into a room with the bureau director and assistant director. I get a "At-Risk" notice handed to me (in State employment speak that means a layoff is coming). Thank god I belong to a union that allows At-Risk employees to have first dibs at open positions around the State. Looks like I won't be a SAN Administrator anymore. I have to say I kind of saw this coming considering the financial situation within the State and the fact that I don't have enough seniority (3.5 years) to keep my job at the current agency. I actually started running down other jobs about two weeks ago with the expectation of getting one of the At-Risk notices. Hopefully I can find another State job. I have until Feb. Anyone else been through this in another State?

Sorry just venting, although I'm not as upset as I thought I would be.
