From what i hear, vinyl has a thin layer for foam that absorbs water which later causes rust.

    paint it.

My wife wants to paint the top silver, but I'm worried the paint shop won't match/blend the paint correctly.

    Complete repaint.

There's a clearcoat over the entire truck. The prep work to paint the white will violate the integrity of that clear. That could lead to lifting near the edge.

Also, even if the shop is able to perfectly match the silver, as the silver and the old and new clearcoats age, you will get slight differences.

Paint cost is directly proportional to quality.

I would think for $5k, you could get a VERY nice quality job, but I have not priced paint work in a very long time.

Get it painted- Vinyl can lead to rust because of the foam. Marioso is right.
