Cool. I have already paid for shipping. He does it by time zone. Since we are eastern, it's $150 for shipping.

anybody know much about brake controllers?

if i purchase one, i saw the install video how it plugs into a harness under the dash, but where does it get signal to brake? is it the 7 pin harness or the 4 pin?

i need to rent a 6x12 enclosed trailer to move, and i ask u haul if i can get one without a brake controller, he goes sure, how are your brakes? I say it's fine, but that's a big trailer with a lot of weight, and he goes, you have insurance right? funny guys....

brake controllers operate through the 7 pin. if you wire the controller to the existing harness, you're good to go. how heavy are you gonna be towing though? the 6500 lb boat and trailer i tow blew out its brakes right before i towed it from virginia to florida. 900 miles without trailer brakes was a lot better than i expected. that's with big tires too. either way you should be fine. brake controller just makes it easier. u-haul people tend to be idiots and think that everyone they talk to know even less than they do, so i would take what he said with a grain of salt.

cool, thanks for the info as usual colin, i doubt it'll be that heavy, i was gonna make one move with just stuff, and then i needed the 6x12 for 2 couches, queen bed, and dining set, so i'm gonna trust ur judgment of no brake controller needed, i can't imagine another time in the near future i'll need it

ordinarily i'm sure they would, but this one was one of those quick stop marts that had uhauls, not a uhaul place

I've towed a tractor without a brake controller. No issues at all. My dad has never used one either and he's towed a lot, including boats around 35'

I towed a 6x12 u haul with my tacoma without it and the brakes were plenty strong enough. No need for the controller or trailer brakes.

Those boat trailers don't have surge brakes? Typically you won't find electric brakes on large boat trailers due to the saltwater and corrosion issues.

22 ft boat i tow has surge, but a brake line corroded through and blew, so i had no brakes the whole drive down from VA.

That makes sense, thought when you said that you meant you had electric brakes.

no, i was just commenting that a 6500 lb load is towable, regardless of the brakes it does or doesn't have.

yep...brake controller for the tacoma would be pointless...the truck cant safely handle anything that would need brakes of that magnitude.

as far as boat trailers surge brakes are the standard..though there is an electric/hydrolic combo that electrically controls an actuator which applies the pressure in the hydrolics.

but yes a standard electric brake system would never survive what boat trailers go through.

surge brakes are a bitch...so happy we got rid of em on our boat trailer.

    also..torsion axles are the SHIT

None of my families boat trailers have ever had brakes. They're pretty much pointless as they go bad basically instantly. From my experience I cant imagine towing anything in a tacoma or a full size that would require a brake controller.
