Good idea. WHere is it/what does it look like?

Our oven has a heating element on the top and bottom. Seems only the bottom one gets hot.

You can aim it anywhere I'd imagine. The thermostat should stop the call for heat when it is uo to temp so aim it at the probe if you can see it, otherwise anywhere shoukd be fine

400* is actually 436* at the back, and 441* on the silver grill thing......
That's within margin of error with IR. You can TRY cleaning the thermocoupler, or get an oven thermometer to verify your temp or get a new oven switch... The oven switch can range from $40 to $200 depending on oven and depending if you have an account with appliance parts place.

hmmmmm. . . think it would be somewhat off then. check the thermocupler as an above poster said, or maybe do a test with something in your home that makes a reaction at 300 degrees.

IR would be the wrong tool. IR would be better for a contact cooking method.

buy a $5 oven thermometer. leave it in there. adjust oven thermostat according to what the inside thermometer is telling you.

thats an obvious fix. you have to take your bare hand and place it on the bottom one for 3-5 seconds and observe the burn. maybe record audio and or video of your reaction for us to analyze. then using your other hand repeat the process on the top element and compare burns/screams/tears, etc.

My thermo is accurate to 2% up to 500*, so Im thinking the readings I got are pointing to the oven being a peice of shit.

see but that's where your issue comes back even if you were to put something in there to cook. when something is cooking it is always "fighting the heat" per se. water is always evaporating/cooking the item so you can't really expect the temperature of your baked item to be the same temperature you are cooking at unitl its past cooked and starting to burn. does that make any sense to any one but me? your read on lets say, a cookie, probably wont be 350 degrees ever cause once that cookie ever actually gets to 350 it will probably be burnt to shit. the easiest, cheapest way to test would be to let it preheat to set temperature and then cook something (a pan of cookies from a roll really would be ideal) and see if they "turn out right" by following the instructions.

The upper burner, generally, only comes on during preheating and broiling. the lower burner only is used to maintain temperature during baking,
