I accepted that fact a long time ago. however, when having to do rework or install componentry after the initial install, there is a right and wrong way to do it. welding while laying upside down, tangled in rebar is the wrong way. people get fired at my company for allowing the craft to do things like that. No time delay or amount of money is worth working in an unsafe manner.

No. That's your ego speaking. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Like I said, that'll get you fired (depending on the company you are working for, or contracted with). Maybe some of the sketchier or less safety conscious companies would like you to "do whatcha gotta do", but all of the companies and people who put your health and safety as the #1 priority would much rather you come to them and work out a safe way to perform the work.

after a lot of bitching the shop managers are starting to realize this. its odd when all the workers are the ones complaining about safety and the owners blow it off

Sorry if this question isn't permitted here; but this seems like the perfect place.
Anyone around Greenville, NC who wants to tackle on the task of welding on some sliders?
Shoot me a PM. I will pay!

Yeah, it's pretty unfortunate when you come across owners like that.

Not trying to justify an unsafe practice. Just pointing out that you can plan all you want but execution is a whole different matter.

Not everyone has the natural instinct of self preservation. pretty good tradeoff if all you have to do is endure a couple of douchebag comments for better health.

a little better health... i have a beard so it doesnt fully seal and i can still smell the fumes sometimes. but its still better than no protection, and im sure the super powers of my beard helps filter the fumes that do get in between the beard and respirator

    ^This. Let them be dumbasses.
Better than this shit ending up in your lungs. My regret is not using these at an earlier age.

    Odds and Ends

We provide respirators to everyone, not all use them. Most do. Absolutely every request for safety equipment is granted ASAP.
Safety is so cheap compared to injuries and downtime.
We had an pretty bad incident a couple years ago with a 20 ton press, a big price of titanium and some unsafe fixturing, guy missed over a month of work, will never look the same and workers comp went up 130k a year. Really bad ordeal that should have been avoided.
Were all guilty at cutting corners at times in a rush but simple things like respirators are just plain smart, it's good to watch your kids grow up.

wow, yeah i use a table saw and chop saw a lot and the table saw has no guards or feather boards on it, and the guards on the chop saw stick up sometimes. but the managers elected a safety committee last week and things seem to already be looking up, but we are a LONG way from being OSAH compliant

LOL thats exactly what I say about my beard, I call it the power of red!:D

Arent those the ones for painting and such? the ones for welding/grinding are usually the pink ones, i think it's p100 or something, at least thats what I've always used and seen others using. I don't have the model numbers though.

I use the 3m half face ones they have at most welding stores.

    the one 4banger linked

I fucking hate cutting metal on a fucking table saw, super unsafe, I usually make the owner push and I'll guide it, that way when it binds his gut take the hit:rolleyes: It's surprising how much we actually use one to cut metal even though we have a shear, cnc plasma, plasma, cut offs etc, yet sometimes a blade it the only way. We also have a festool track saw, it works well but sometimes the table saw is the only way to go end rant:D

We had one guy cutting a piece of pewter on the miter saw, it kicked and luckily his hand didn't get pushed into the blade but he fucked his hand for a few months.

The greatest is the safety meetings in the morning and in the afternoon doing exactly what you were told not to do. I'm always the guy to say no and take shit for it but could care less:D

You've got it. Those are the ones we use too, 3m 6100 face piece and P100 filters.

    P stands for particulates
100 refers to the percentage of particulates trapped

x2 with what he said. I have the same one. Nice comfortable fit (even with my beard), lightweight/slim filters that are easy to replace.

In pretty sure those rectangular ones are for paint etc not welding/grinding. There are different types of the pink ones also. They fit under all the hoods I've used.
