I've got machines with taps as well as rheostats. I actually find the machine with taps does a better job on auto sheetmetal.

As long as I have been welding, i still need to practice on some scrap body panels to get the myself and the machine dialed in.

Well I'm using a Hobart which only has a 1,2,3,4-12 option so getting dialed in wasn't an option. Definitely don't wanna do auto sheetmetal work with it again lol

Nobody just starts welding on body panels. It is much harder than structual iron. It just takes practice. You'll get eventually. Keep at it.

Definitely not the most precise welder for that. I tried the same thing back in highschool trying to reweld some patch panels on. After that i decided id leave it to professionals if i ever needed patch work done again, ha.

I use a 100 amp Lincoln mig for body work. With small wire I can dial it in great.

Small wire is key. Makes it much easier.

The first project I've been designing and managing at my new job is finally getting welded up. I ran into a few hurdles, so it's been a lot of long days. I like the overtime though. I think we scrapped over $2000 of 304 12 gauge due to the k factor in solidworks not matching our press brake bend allowance.

All of the tabs lined up perfectly and this whole thing was tacked together without any filler rod. Only fusing at the tabs.

Strike one for the new tubing bender. The shop bought all pipe dies! I wired it up and ran it today. It will bend pipe, but trying a piece of tuning in a one size down die doesn't work. It just flattened it out.

The fit and finish on the machine leaves a lot to be desired as well. Had to slot a hole in the follower carrier because the drilled and tapped holes don't line up.

The guys enjoy it. It's a solid 3 days of tig by multiple guys to fully weld and grind one of these up. We have 15 more coming down the line soon.

Lol I just fired 2 welders last week. One dude was caught sleeping inside one of the hoppers with a torch in his hand like he was welding. And he came in drunk one morning. Ballsy.

We were hiring, but we mainly hire through a temp agency so we can fire people easily. It's amazing how hard it is to get good help. I have 4 guys that get almost as much done as we did with 6 guys. And I don't have to hear the bitching anymore. I'm not sure if I'm going to hire another guy or not.

It's negative 6 degrees right now here in Minnesota, so it might be kind of cold driving around with half doors...

The best part about designing is seeing it come to life. I also do all the cnc mill and laser cutter programming, so I have my hand in everything from design to assembly.

Does anybody have any pictures of 1.75 tube that was bent with a JD2 model 3 bender? Does it flatten it out much or kink past 90° on the 180° die?

shouldnt hardly flatten at all, dies are tight tolerance. And no kinking should be present so as long as a appropriate radius die is used for the wall thickness(they list min wall in the die specifics). Ex, .06 wall tube might kink but the .09 and thicker is usually good to go.

Thanks for your input. I'm looking into buying the model 3 but my dad is old school and says that style bender doesn't work.
