The Long Arm QF holds up to 50lbs with a breaking strength of 120lbs.

Correct, however the tank weighs 50# when full, so 2Gs of acceleration, which I think is pretty likely offroad, will exceed the combined 100# for 2 QFs. That is without any safety factor as well, which should be considerable in an application like this. The QFs will probably hold in most applications, but I don't think I would consider them "safe"

    Use three then :p

I agreed that a strap is a better option.

Dunno if you could source a large enough mount for you application - but we've got about 10 of these on the boat I operate, and they hold up well.

Barring that, some kind of strapping and a cradle seems to be a better option than a QF.

Welded with the new 211 today, I'm happy with it.

So im looking into a larger "new to me" welder.... My dad currently has a small 110 Century mig W/ gas. It does fine for small stuff, welded my exhaust up really nicely. But the thicker stuff it stuggles with For instance sliders, frame work, etc... Overheats often when welding long beads or thicker metals. I'm getting better, and looking to upgrade to the next level. Looking into millers or lincolns or hobarts. Opionons? As always money comes into play. The Century is a cheap welder i know. But im prepared to drop up to a grand on a used unit. I found an almost brand new hobart 230 for 1000 bucks. Nice unit?

    Thanks in advance for opinions!

Like you, I started on a Century. I wish I would have kept it. It worked awesome almost anything automotive. If you decide on a 230 volt machine only, it would be good to keep it as a back up.

I like stand alone welding machines. Main reason, thrives are lazy. They will take other stuff before they will blow a grape trying to rip off a heavy welded. Just one of my quick opinions.

Miller 211's are dual voltage. Not sure about the others in that range

I picked up an 80's MillerMatic 200 with a full tank of c25 for $400, it's old but works great on jobs big and small and parts are still available and cheap.

Jace, I have a Miller 180 that you are welcome to come tryout anytime. You can get a new one, now the 190, for ~$800 with rebate.

Or the 211 for ~$950 with rebate.

awesome info thank you James. Did you do all your fab work with the 190? is that a 110 or 220 input? my little 110 just doesn't cut if 3/8" steel.... Id like a miller, great rep and I love the massive one here at work, but its pushing 4k!

Yup, everything I have done to my truck was on my 180, it is 220V only. The 211 will be 110/220V.

ok so does that mean the 211 will be the more versatile welder because it has the 2 voltage input levels? further more, does that mean you wish your 220v miller 180 did better with thinner metals?

Well, if you don't plan on bringing it anywhere, other than where you have 220V access, the 180 is fine. I have not had the need yet for running it off 110V.

No, you can just turn it down, both the 190 and 211 are rated down to 24 ga, the 190 goes to 5/16", and the 211 to 3/8". You will need 220V for the thicker metal on either machine, not sure what the max thickness would be running them on 110V. These are all single pass as well.

Either will be plenty for truck fab, I would say it really is just a matter if you want to be able to run it off 110V.

very cool, with that explanation in mind^ id say the 211 would better fit my needs. 110 or 220 compatible...

You will be Happy with the Hobart Jace ... I know , I have one too .
Works great on any project . Best welding is done on 230V with gas shield.
One thing you might want to check before you weld is the correct polarity.
They come set up for Flux Core. (Straight polarity)
Welding mild steel with gas requires (reverse polarity).
I mention this , because I was excited when I got my machine and didn't check polarity .... The machine will weld in the wrong polarity but there will be no strength in the weld . I later did a project and found my mistake the Hard way. I was a welder by profession, pipe , and have many certifications .... So it just goes to show ya that shit happens to even the experienced .
Read the chart and Enjoy your New Welder !! :D
