Finished this in time for my wife's birthday....

 

Nice. I made a Wine Barrel cooler. My step-son welded together the base. I have to get a recent picture showing the door. Here it is with the wine barrel on the base to check it's sturdiness. The hole actually goes down (for draining it). We used it at a party recently. I put in 60 pounds of ice. There was still ice in there two days later. One thing I did differently on the bands was to drill through the bands into each board and attach it with screws (about 200 screws in all).

 

Helped my friend pour his new house foundation walls today , 54 cubic yards , took us about 4 hours to place and finish

 

I have an ignorant question Pete.

Once the foundations sets up is all the lumber removed and reused somewhere else or does it stay in place as part of the new home?

 

15-20,000sf home?

 

Typically it's pulled up and used over and over again...it will be resized and reused for numerous jobs

Was not sure but I suspected that was the case. I was never involved with construction of custom homes. Office buildings is another story altogether.

 

I like that. Can ya tell me more and a pic of it open?

 

Bit of an odd question, but what's a proper way to get involved in the carpentry/building trade? A situation where I could learn directly from an individual would be ideal, but hard to find. I'm in the north bay area of CA.

 

The form ply is mine , it gets oiled and re-used , lots of it is over 10 years old , the lumber gets used up in the house

Around here some big general contractor s have an apprentice program. So do unions.
I'm a plumber and from what I see people willing to work hard and learn a trade and take pride in their work is far and few in between. Good luck.

 

Apprenticeship

 

Thanks both of you. Apprenticeship through the Carpenter's Union? Or should I be looking more on the builder/contractor side of things and see if someone recognizes that I'm not a waste of their time?

I'm 29 and reasonably intelligent, know how things work but haven't done everything hands on, just theoretical(?). Like to work with my hands and build things/fix things. 6'6" and 285lbs so not built so much for crawl spaces or attics, however.

 

Doesn't have to be union , that's your decision to make

 

Research some companies that tend to stay busy. Be willing to be a laborer to start.
