I understand that OZ-T literally translates into "hypocrite", but that doesn't mean that everyone enjoys seeing it in action.

And yeah, we've been living with my in-laws for the last 2 months, because we sold our old house quick and before we found our new house. It's been a loooonng 2 months. We are ALL ready to move on.

I took a lot of time off from TW just over a year ago because the wife and I bought a burnt adobe block house that was built in 1971. The interior pretty much needed to have everything gutted and remodeled. Wish I'd known about this thread so I could have stayed semi-active on TW during the demo/reno.

The biggest change was the kitchen...









I took down three walls - two of which were load-bearing; ripped up all the old carpet, linoleum, and tile, framed in/insulated the west side walls ,upgraded the electrical throughout the house, and had a company do a concrete overlay throughout the entire house.

The window wall in the kitchen was originally framed in with 1"x2" but since we moved the sink underneath the window we framed it in with 2x4s so we could run the plumbing and put some insulation in.

 

How thick was the concrete ?

Under a 1/4" I think. They ended up having to go thicker in some spots cause of the condition the floor was in. Not too sure exactly.

Did they go right over the existing tile ?

 

There's some skim coats of epoxy they used as well. I like it though.

 

I like the concrete look too , my basement which is about 700 sqft has a heated coloured concrete slab for the finished floor

 

No I ripped everything out and scraped up all the thinset. They spent the first two days with the floor grinders getting the last of the crap off. They also had to scrape up all the mastic/adhesive that was used to keep the linoleum down.

One company said they would just go over all the tile and that I wouldn't have to rip it up and that just didn't seem right to me. The company I went with stressed the importance of the prep work and making sure the floor was completely ready.

 

How do they deal with expansion joints / control joints or joist movement ?

 

Yeah, super easy to clean and looks nice. Plus, if we ever sell the house, it's kind of a blank canvas for the next homeowner to put down whatever they want without really demoing anything. I'm sure they'd have to strip the sealant off the floors and scuff them up somehow if they laid tile down though.

 

The company that wanted to go over the existing tile? Not sure.

This is a single story ranch style house that's over 40 years old with a solid foundation - would there be any of those issues?

 

Oh , is it a slab throughout ?
