What do you need to know?

 

I'm switching from oil to gas to save $$. Is there anything to installing a high efficiency unit other then running some PVC thru the foundation for the induced draft instead of duct pipe to the chimney which is what I have now ? Thanks.

Course u also gotta have decent locks..... I locked myself out 1 day and raked the lock in about 3 seconds.

 

Gap is pretty small. But yes, there's ALWAYS a way in.

 

Anyone ever replace a pressure relief valve on a water heater? Mine took a shit and flooded my basement. I just need a temporary solution to get me by until I get my gas line run and can replace the water heater.

 

By the looks of mine, seems like it just unscrews from the tank.

 

Yea mine too. I'm assuming I just need to drain the tank and replace the valve..

 

As long as the safety valve is at the top of the tank, which it should be, just shut off all power sources(water, gas, oil, electricity, ect.) and relieve the pressure off the tank and replace the safety.

 

Thanks man. And that should be available at Home Depot? Do these valves just go bad or did something happen to trigger the valve to open?

 

Its a t + p valve
Temperature and pressure
But yes they get scale build up and go off
If it happens again have heater replaced before you go boom

I'm in the middle of getting natural gas into my house, exactly for this reason so I can replace my water heater.

Well I changed out the relief valve, ran some water through the tank, then turned the electric back on, and didnt hear it turn on..

so I removed the little panels that have the electronics on the inside and everything is burnt to shit. Water heater is completely fucked.

there's no way I can deal with no hot water untill I get the gas lines approved, installed, and inspected, so I guess I'm in the market for another electric water heater. FML...

Have you thought about a Hybrid water heater? It has a heat exchanger built in. When it's hot out, it draws heat from the surrounding air to heat the water. When the temperature is too cold (about 40 degrees) it uses standard electric heating coils. It's about half the energy cost of a new electric water heater (much more expensive up front though). One side effect is that it cools the space (good in the summer).

My house is all electric and we also considered going to gas (cooking). We bought an induction cooktop (which is awesome) and I'll replace the water heater with a hybrid when it's time. We're a lot warmer year round though. According to GE's calculator, based on our electricity prices, we'd break even in about 2 years.
