    Now i am looking at all these lockers.. if i can indeed turn them on and off like my TRD locker.. then I am very interested in getting a newer, stronger differential..

    My guess is pinion bearing seized, pinion snapped.

    its something to think about then, if you can find an 8.4 housing pretty cheap do it, if not id just go with the same in the rear.

    its all about how much money you want to throw at it, cause hell you can use this as a reason to regear front and rear

    Get a new third and call it a day. You might be able to find a housing on http://www.car-part.com/ if you're hell bent on an 8.4

    craigslist, wrecking yards, hell tacomaworld haha

    if you can get that cheap eastcoast gearsuppy does awesome work and i think they even gaurantee they have the lowest price, and if i recall correctly use nitro gears

    nitro and yukon are major brands

    The majority of broken 8" rears are because the ring gear cracked or lost teeth. Most aren't carrier or pinion or spider gear issues. The stock gears were flawed. Very few people have had issues with 8" rears and aftermarket gears like, Yukon or Nitro.

    Your issue, I would guess you snapped your pinion and I would guess this was due to a seized bearing, is an oddity and I wouldn't think a flaw or sign of weakness of the 8" rear end.
