I don't like the rods too much. I use rope on both ends and use the access hatch at the bottom to pull it down and then from the roof pull it back up.

Be careful with a stainless liner as you want to use a plastic style brush (not the steel ones) as it can tear up the coating and rust. Or so I was told.

Thanks Ben. Ya we have triple walled flue in ours too.

Anyone ever tried those "chimney sweeping logs" they advertise? I'm guessing it's bullshit. They sure make it seem legit though.

My roof is not easily accessable for rope. And it's solid SS so there is no coating.

I only use them to get the fire going when I'm burning coal.

You talking about the fire starters or the sweep logs?

Its a ~@#&$^(*!&#$^ to get the coal going when it goes out sometimes if you don't have any wood handy. Those logs help but aren't a good substitution for real wood.

I used to. Moved 40 miles farther from the depleting wood source (can only cut dead trees). New house has gas fireplace. I wont miss cutting, hauling, splitting, stacking & restacking wood. I will miss the cheep heat. We might get a pellet stove for the new place.

I burn close to two cords a year in a high efficiency fireplace. Its basically a wood stove in the wall. Anyone got any unique methods of storing their wood? Please keep it clean

I thorw those in the fireplace at home sometimes, if we have people over. Easier than tending to wood, just let it burn. I also break them in half and use them to start the fire in my fire pit in the back yard.

This is the fireplace inset we have in the family room. I haven't used it yet but the prior owner said it will drive you out of the room.

We have a firewood storage box on the side of the house that can be accessed inside the house through a small door by the fireplace.

LOL, love the water run-off system you have in place. What is this talk about depleting wood source? Gas (propane) is so expensive to heat with, otherwise I would stick with just that.

Cool door, how well is it insulated. I can imaging a lot of heat loss through there.

I don't think it's very well insulated, but I haven't looked at it very closely. That said, it is San Diego.

You don't need a fireplace like that in San Diego. No wonder the previous owner made that comment - it will drive you out of the house.
