So the wife and I finally decided to build a 12x24 shed/shop for all of my "stuff" which includes the bikes, tools, yard implements, etc. Since our property only has one place that would make sense and it has a significant slope the simple build turned into a real project, especially since I'm pouring a 5" slab. So far the project has gone well over budget due to a real underestimate of the amount of gravel needed to backfill the foundation for slab prep and me not having a front-end loader (shoveled about 17 tons of gravel in one day by hand before my back gave out). Between inspections and the weather we've had a few schedule delays as well.
Short of it is I'm just now coming to a good place to be able to share the progress. Next weekend I've got friends coming over for a shed raising party so I should have some more pics after that. Hopefully I'll be able to post the completed work space in the show your shop thread shortly after that (once I can build my benches, lofts, etc and get everything moved in).

Yeh, thought about that after I finished the foundation. Thing is, any bigger and it would be defined as a garage and make taxes jump significantly as well as the additional material costs. We just couldn't afford any bigger right now and i always have the other 1/2 of the attached garage if I get a big toy:)

I bought a kit so I'm kinda stuck with the design but it's got 7' sides, steep gambrel roof with 11'11" peak so there's plenty of space for storage once I build a couple lofts and hang stuff from the rafters.

Yep. About 3-4 acres worth and our property covers ~ 1/10 of the water. Pull some nice large mouth out of there and we've seen grass carp better than 3 ft.

Yep. Laid each and every block (had a friend helping for a couple hours one day) over the course of 4 days (2 weekend and 2 days after work). 182 blocks in all. I've never appreciated masons so much in my life...

What a cool project. Wish I had a bit more space to be able to build something like that. City living I guess :(

Wanna see more pics as it progresses.

That must have been one heck of a fight to move all that gravel manually but in the end, I guess you pwned the gravel. Looking forward to seeing the final end product.

Yeh. I didn't realize what a few years of a desk job will do to your calluses. By the end of the 6 hours it took me I had burned through the first set of blisters and had new ones coming up under them. i kinda like the scars though...;)
Standing on the smaller pile at the end was absolutely a triumphant moment, even if it wasn't completely done.

Forgot to mention earlier that I'm treating all of the wood (inside and out) with a termite/bug and water treatment. Side bonus is that it looks like a nice stain about the shade of a log cabin. Got to add a little class to the joint:D

I can handle shoveling, but I hate the blisters that come with it.

I've done more than my fair share of shoveling and tilling. I re-sodded most of my yard, dug a trench for my main sewer line, refilled that trench with about 20 yards, filled low areas under my house, dug out high areas all around my garage, and if I were to go rake some leaves in my yard, I would be crying about blisters.

Took 1/2 day on Friday to start prep and worked till late, was up around 5:30 and working by 6:15 Saturday morning. Couple of friends came over around 10am, one left by noon (scheduling conflict that his wife won) and my dad showed up around 1:30. We worked all day and into the night. Around 8pm a thunderstorm started sounding off in the distance while we were on the roof trying to get the shingles on before the ran hit. Friend holding a flashlight, me feeding shingles, my dad putting the rows down. We ran out of shingles about 15 sqft from the end and called it a night just after 9pm. Nothing like working long hard hours with friends to clear your head of all other worries. Slept like a baby last night, took everyone to breakfast and sent them on with many thanks, then got back to work. Here's the results...

Night before assembly after building the rafters and finishing treating the wood.

Tons of work but well worth it. Got a bunch of trim work to do, finish the roof, build the lofts and workbench, finish anchoring the frame, then move everything in. Anyone bored next weekend? :D
