Bike mount worth the price?
I recently found out that my mountain bike won't fit in my short bed unless I lay it down diagonally. While this is fine temporarily, i was looking into the rockymounts clutch sd bed rail mount. This is a great idea, but it's $54 not including shipping?!
that seems a little much for one mount. Anything else i should consider or is this worth the money? thanks for all input guys

I put two fork clamping mounts on the bed rail against the cab. I bought them from the local bike shop for $20 each. Went to home depot and bought some bolts and washers. used two washers on the inside lip of the rail and big washers on the outside. Basically clamping down on the rail system. The mounts also have large holes so you can lock the bikes up. I put the lock through on of my spokes as well so the front wheel is locked in too so you dont have to put a dirty tire inside the truck
Here's a pic. |

I use the one's from Toyota that fit on the cleats. I really like them for both my mountain bike and my road bike.
BTW, what part of the metroplex do your mountain bike? I could use more people to ride with.

The rocky mount clutch is awesome. I posted this in another thread, but if you email them about used mounts (they have a link for used products on their site) and they have no used items in stock, they will give you a coupon code for 10% off a new one.

X2... it's expensive because it's worth it.

It's worth it
I explored all the options and ultimately went with the rocky mounts clutch. It was a little expensive but it certainly beats laying your bike down and taking up the entire bed. My bike fits in the rack with the tailgate closed with about one inch to spare(short bed). It has held my bike in place at expressway speeds and on gravel roads alike.

It's a truck. Why do you need a mount for your bike. Can't you just lay it in the back of the truck??

I have a pair of Rocky Mounts and I love 'em.
They are lockable - which is o.k. for grabbing a bite to eat or going in to a store, don't know if I would leave it overnight like that. My only beef with them is that they rattle a bit when there is no bike clamped on. You could save 30 bucks on a mount, but have you ever seen a bike fall off a rack on the freeway? I have, and it was not pretty. Woo hoo Ghostrider! |

I would definitely get the Rocky Mounts SD Clutch. I hall my bikes 4-5 days a weeks and travel to races almost every weekend and the rocky mounts are by far the best. I have tried the home made ones but they just didn't do it for me. The next best thing would be a roof rack if you need your bed for other equipment. AEbike.com has the SD Clutch for $46 I think, spend $75 and get free shipping. The locking mechanism is nice but I also use a cable lock but never leave my bikes in the bed longer than few minutes at most.
