For N.C. it means:
There are 10 different classifications of electrical contracting licenses. Each license has a specific scope and limitation of work allowed. The Limited (L), Intermediate (I), and Unlimited (U) classifications allow a licensee to perform residential, commercial and industrial work. The Residential dwelling license (SP-SFD) permits electrical contracting projects pertaining to single-family detached residential dwellings. There are also six (6) special restricted electrical contracting classifications which allow only a limited phase of electrical contracting work: Low Voltage (SP-LV), Elevator (SP-EL), Plumbing, Heating, and Air Conditioning (SP-PH), Groundwater pump (SP-WP), Electric Sign (SP-ES), Swimming Pool (SP-SP).

200 amps is lots, you must have a big house...... or a grow op!

Thanks for the info! Hell, in St. Louis all the homes are built with 400 amps service!

Minimum around here is usually a 100 Amp panel. Panel size is determined by square footage and demand. Sure it would be possible to trip the main but 99.99% of people would never have enough appliances/heaters running at one time to do so.

Do they use electric heat in St Louis? 400amps

400 amps seems like overkill for a house, I couldn't imagine many houses would pull half that amount of amperage.
But overkill is good!

most houses are (older)100 amps to (newer) are 200 amps. i dont how big the houses you guys are living in but 400 amps is way way too big for a house unless its 15,000 sp ft.
maybe like blktrd6spd said.maybe if your house as all electric heat, stove, and hot water you will need more than 200 amp service

Is he saying the panel is 200amps, or the circuit in question? Is it in the on or off position? Could it be a generator that feeds back to the breaker box?

You can add a hot tub. A typical hot tub wired 220 only draws 50amps.

just make sure your not running electric heat or washer, dryer, stove, fridge, microwave, water heater at the same time...

400 is really convenient. especially for having a loaded garage...
