Lawn edger - Gas Vs. Electric

I want to get a lawn edger this year, but not sure if I should get the electric black and decker or troy bilt 29cc 4 stroke. Im wondering which has more power and better cut - Anyone have either of these?

 

The gas powered one will more likely have more power. Have you checked out the WORX weed wacker/edger. I have one and love it.

 

If you have a larger yard, I like the portability of the gas unit and between the trimmer, chainsaw and blower, I always have some 2 cycle gas mixed up.

The trick is to do the edging when it isn't too dry and not muddy and do it often. It is a PITA the first go around or if you haven't done it in a while so just take your time with either model.

 

This is KEY, especially if you have a fence (I learned the hard way).

I have a 4 stroke gas unit but they are all a pain in the a$$ to start. If you have a small amount to do, definitely go with electric.

I have the Troy Bilt. It's a rebadged Craftsman but it works pretty good and starts easy. The one I have also has an electric starter that helps out when I haven't run the thing in awhile. It also has an easy pull start so you don't have to yank your arm out. I would also recommend Stihl but I like not mixing gas.

The 4 strokes don't have as much power as their two stroke counterparts but mine works good enough for me.

 

I originally had a 2-stroke Ryobi split shaft weed wacker and then got the edger and blower/vac attachments. The engine went after 8 years and I replaced it with a 2-stroke Troy Bilt. Even though the Troy Bilt came with a weed wacker head, I still use all the original Ryobi attachments.

 

I use my gas weed whacker for edging.

 

Thanks all. I have been using my weed smasher for edging, but it is a pain and won't cut that nice deep trench like a steel blade will and after a little "yardwork drinking" its always a wavy line down the sidewalk.

 

i do the edge upkeep with a echo line trimmer. but the first edge of the year with a stick edger from echo. i wont use electric stuff untill i am 85 or so. and they start easy if you do the same routine and maint on them

 

Gas is the only way to go. If you can, go with a straight shaft.

 

get a split shaft string trimmer. i have a 49cc echo, you can take the weed wacker off and put other attachments on. i have a brush cutter (10 inch tablesaw blade), steel blade edger, brush sweeper, and rubber paddle sweeper for mine. i love it

 

Do yourself a favor and buy gas. Don't waste your time with that worthless electric crap.

Buy a "stick" edger, they are much easier to manuever, especially in curvy areas. The only thing the walk behind edgers are good for it cutting the first edge on a new bed.

Also spend the money and buy a good trimmer & edger. The only thing I would recommend buying from home depot is Echo. Don't buy Ryobi, troy built, crapsman, poulan, weadeater are all garbage. I left out a few. You get what you pay for. That equipment is only designed to last for 3-4 years tops then you will be replacing it. Stihl, Echo, Redmax, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, Shindaiwa (basically anything you see on the pro's trucks) will last a homeowner 10+ years.

It's kind of like buying a Domestic vs buying a toyota. Sure, the domestic will seem like a better value up front because it's cheaper than the Toyota, but in the the long run the Toyota will last a hell of a lot longer and give you less headaches and downtime than the domestic POS.

x3 I just turn my weed wacker over and edge. I have an electric edger and havent used it for about 10 years. It sucks to run over the cord when edging, dont ask me how i know.....

 

Gas edger! 4 stroke weedeater and no premixing! Gas lawnmower!
