Umm couple quick questions, since you are a police officer.
Why do officers( in particular state officers) run up on you real fast and then get within 2( or less) car lengths of you? If I was speeding I could understand it, but otherwise what is the purpose?

Also, sometimes when someone is following too close, I downshift a gear or two and let the clutch out to give them an idea. I have done it to police officers, and it works. I don't want to brake check them, but I want to get the message across that they are way too close.
Is there a law against this?

^ when i see a cop creep up on me, I usually a) shift lanes b) bail out and run

I try not to slow down or brake check them

well what I mean is that if they get too close, i.e. tailgating. I generally go back to the speed limit after I downshift. If they are coming up on me, or anyone for that matter, I will go to the right hand lane.

Ok, Jeff.... If you don't like being passed, why do officers drive like 5 - 10 miles UNDER the speed limit? Do you like seeing how many people will line up behind you afraid to pass you?

I set my cruise on the speed limit and I'll pass you if you are going under

    touche

theres no telling why officers drive a certain speed...maybe theyre being dicks...maybe theres something ahead that you may need to slow down for...

the speed limit is not a right...traffic is just as much a condition of the roadway as weather and daylight

Ok, since we are asking questions about the speed that cops go, why is it acceptable for cops to go like 10 over the limit, especially on two lane roads where the speed limit is 45. idk about where yall live but here in the DC/Nova area i get passed all the time by the county police going atleast 55 in a 45 without lights or anything on. I dont have an issue with the authority but that really gets my goat when they are driving at a speed that would get me pulled over

Technically when they have their lights and sirens off, they are suppose to drive just like us. And I also think they are suppose to drive the speed limit when the lights and sirens are on too.

I actually don't have a problem when they go over the speed limit, only when they come up on me at a very fast pace of speed and almost run into my bumper, when sirens/lights off. Very unsafe.

Sometimes they also respond to calls that don't require sirens/lights, but they are important calls, that do require them to get there in a fairly fast pace.
They also respond to calls that are "code 2" which is a "Urgent-no light or siren" call. (You don't want the bad guys to know your coming)

Some are just bad examples....lol but I don't care. Very hard job, we shouldn't care about it. They ARE the good guys....

Tigerfan00 can correct me if I'm wrong.

at least for the state of SC...thats semi correct

we can, and do, routinely need to exceed the speed limit to respond to priority emergent calls such as burglary, shooting incidents, armed robbery, and the like

In SC, code 1 is obeying all traffic laws and driving like any other citizen...code 2 is emergency 4 way flashers...allows vehicle to exceed the speed limit but must obey all traffic control devices such as red lights and stop signs, and then code 3 which is full blue lights and sirens

also...it should be kept in mind that we are trained in emergency response and pursuit driving...our skill level compared to the average driver is typically greater...not always...but more often than not

Just what I was thinking... I never ride the rear of or pass a patrol car... You're just asking for a ticket... Always give them added space and keep them in front of you... I've never been pulled over by the cop in front of me...
