    I agree. Sounds more like a tax than a fine.

    So, the rich should be punished just for being rich? Punishment is punishment. Should rich get longer jail sentences for other crimes? Should the poor be excempt from paying tickets? I'm not following the logic.

    You are taking it out of context. The fines are there as a deterrent, and by making them based off of wealth they are an equal deterrent. You cant honestly say that a guy with $1 mil in the bank is going to worry about a $300 fine as much as the guy with only $500.

    You can't apply it to any other punishments though. 5 years in fed lock up is 5 years, doesn't really matter what your worth, its an equal deterrent. Trying to say the speeding fine law is wrong because you couldn't apply it is a backward argument.
