Could the paper in oil filters go bad with age ? I'm wondering if it might become brittle, then slough off and plug the oil pump. I have several filters made in the 1980's and I'm wondering if I should sell, or just toss them.

Yeah, I would toss them. The filtering media may have gotten brittle in some parts among other things.
