If we didn't have hellish emissions tests in NC, I would.

Ever know someone dying of emhpysema? It's torture and it lasts a long time. Yeah, our cars aren't the only pollution, but it's something we can control. Keep your vehicles tuned up, trash the polluting machinery and breath easier.

Everbody shows from Central California - is that the "politically correct" way to write San Francisco/Oakland?

Dozens if not hundreds. Usually they got it from smoking. Once again, pick a vice and start working on a disease like the rest of us. Otherwise, you're going to feel awful stupid lying in bed one day dying of nothing.

The problem with the aftermarket cats is they don't last. I went through the same thing with my 1984 Volvo. About 15-16 years ago, cat went bad. Replaced it with a OEM for around $1100.00 bucks. It lasted about another 10 years. The next time I bought a aftermarket cat for around $200.00 and it lasted 2 years. The next time I again bought a aftermarket cat but installed it prior to my smog test and took it off after the test. The next couple of test I put it on before my test and again took it off after the test. When I got rid of the car I smogged it, pulled off the cat and tossed it in the back of the car.

2 years each at ~$125 means I can get about 9 aftermarket cats good for about 18 years of service for the price of one OEM which has gotten me...3 or 4 each? The cat was replaced with OE at 100,000 by my folks before I bought the car off them. This is the only thing that's ever gone wrong with it.

Did a little googling and apparently 03/04 Matrixes have an issue with the ECM that makes the AFR a bit rich. Toyota issued a TSB that...doesn't work, because cats are still shitting the bed after having the ECM reflashed to fix the AFR.

Honestly, in this situation, it sounds like cheap disposable cats are a better idea.

    and oh yeah,
thieves ripped his cat while he was at the PINY PONY titty bar in ATL. it was right out front in their parking lot.

The Volvo cat was three flange bolts, if your Matrix cat is the same you might consider the route I took. It only took me about 10 to 15 min to swap them out and then pull it off after the test.

Actually it's not the platinum that makes these things so expensive. It's the rhodium. It's currently at $2400 an ounce. Yes I said ounce. Platinum is only about $1700 an ounce.....yes only.

Last summer when all the CATs were frequently "liberated" via sawzall, rhodium was at $10,000 an ounce. Shits rare brah.

Why does everything always have to come up California vs. anywhere else. People have beef with California without ever even setting foot in the state.

I lived there for 7 or so years when I was a kid. Loved the high Sierras.

Good. Stay over there. And don't come here. Ever.

    It's midpipe.

Agreed. They can keep the rest.

Rhodium is the most expensive metal on Earth...really only available in dust form...even when you buy it they want you to keep in at the secure lock-up facility.
