How to check the starter if its GOOD ???

Hey folks, I pulled the starter out of my 97 camry as it only clicks and dont start (even jump starting) is there a way to test it with a meter..??
Before i check the Neutral/Drive shift switch i would like to be sure of the starter.

 

Doesn't Autozone check them for free??

 

ya they do, im not positive on this (in fact im probably wrong) but i think it has to be in the vehicle for them to check it

Jump it! The clicking is just the solenoid. If you understand basic electric principles and can read the diagram for it, it becomes pretty self evident how you would test any part of it.

That kind of knowledge is a lifelong tool you will probably use often. Worth learning.

 

To test the starter: Put the starter in a vise, Positive goes on the side lug(on the starter, not the solenoid), tap the negative on the side of the bolt flange.
The solenoid is probably junk from hard starting and jump starting. Low voltage/poor connections/bad wires cause the starter to draw more amps. This wears out the solenoid and starter. Get it rebuilt.
Check for corroded/frayed/poorly connected cables, and have the battery CAPACITIVELY tested. Load tests work for shit; capacitive tests the total health of the battery. Odds are it's bad, just judging from the starter problem. If the battery is more than 4 years old, or has been completely discharged more than three times, replace it.
