Yeah i went and checked it out today. I know of the guy who owned it. He owns a little market here. I was just talking to my fiances dad about doing the engine rebuild/swap. He was saying he thinks the guy probably blew the motor on it, then just figured he wouldnt pay his payments anymore for a car that wasn't running. I just called one local shop looks like 1,500 for labor if I wanted them to install. Now I'm waiting on a call from a shop a couple hours away to try to find how much the engine alone would cost.

Yeah i'm just hoping that everyone thinks that its going to cost too much and be too much time to repair it. The banks just looking for some kind of money out of it. Hopefully it'll be enough

The engine is based on the Toyota but lotus does some head work and balance work. I'd bet that parts from lotus are not cheap, but a Toyota replacement would fall a little short but would still be fun. I say buy it and build a toyota motor for it.

The NA Elise is still only rated at like 190hp. As long as the replacement is making similar HP and torque numbers I wouldn't be all that concerned myself. And he could always get the motor that the TRD supercharger was available for and use something that. The supercharged version of the Elise is only putting out around 215hp.

DO IT!! The engine is non other than the exact same engine in a Toyota Celica GT-S.

My buddy has a 2001 Celica GT-S with a 2zz and that thing SCREAMS! Redline is at something ridiculous like 8500 rpm, and it has Variable Valve Timing with Lift and "intelligence"...which is always fun.

Celicas engines aren't exactly that abundant, but it'd be way easier to find than an engine for a different car equally as rare.

    *patiently awaits a build thread*

I hope you're short. Those cars are flipping tiny. A guy at work had one, he was about 5'5" and 135 lbs and he fit it nicely.

http://www.monkeywrenchracing.com/ Everything 2ZZ you could ever dream of. I had a 2000 Celica GTS with a little bit of head work done and it SCREAMED up to the 8400rpm fuel cut. Watch out for rebuilt engines, it takes a very good ($$$) machine shop to assemble one to the correct tolerances for that toyota reliability to remain intact. If it were me a toyota shortblock and rebuilt head would be getting installed.

One issue to note with the Elise is that the fiberglass "clamshell" body structure is EXTREMELY fragile... AKA what would be considered a fender bender in another car = totaled in an Elise, food for thought if you were planning on making it a DD.

We had one come in our valet and I couldnt fit in it, I'm 6'3". Plus it sits so low. The lady who was driving it got a kick out of it watching me try to squeeze in, she finally walked over and just pulled it out herself.

alright fellas, bidding ends the 6th at noon. I've seen a couple people looking at it today(first day its been out on the street), and i've known most of the people.(Most really can't afford this even at such a potentially low cost). My father in-law has a good friend who owns a speciality automotive shop. The guy says he'll do the installation labor free..(he said to consider it our wedding gift). Now i just need to win the bid and find a engine. :D

would I be better off buying a used engine(17k miles)for like 2,400 or would it be better to spend the 5k for a brand new engine? Or does it really matter?
