I love my 2006 Jetta TDI with the diesel engine and the manual 5 speed. It has 92,000 miles. I drive it as fast as the traffic or lack of traffic will let me drive but, I still average around 43 mpg.

I had a friend that owned a Prius and once he drove the Jetta, he traded his Prius in on a Jetta less than 1 month later.

Go test drive Jetta TDI before you buy anything.

I had these five as rental cars. This is how I rank them based on few days of driving.

    1) 2010 Elantra 1x (by far the best out of these 4)
    2) 2010 Sonata 1x (was passenger only)
    3) 2010 Focus 1x (pleasantly surprised just like with the Hyundais)
    4) 2010 Corolla 3x (passenger only - very boring to me, disappointing)
    5) 2010 Yaris 1x (way too small and uncomfortable and underpowered)

Until a few months ago we had a Speed3.
Looks just like the regular 3 but has a 270hp turbocharged motor and sport suspension. A BLAST to drive, and still got 31mpg on the highway.

I would get TDI jetta stick if she can handle it. you can and will get upwards of 40MPG no joke look it up. clean diesel is the way! if that's not your thing a CNG honda would be great! and the all wheel drive lancer's are FUN and safe in bad weather.

I'm shocked how many people chose the lancer. Mitsubitchy is notoriously the worst shit ever made.

If you didn't require 4 doors, the 2011 Scion TC is SICK

That's definitely the downside, and what you have to spend is what it is. It's a bit like hybrids, costs $$$ to play in these waters. From the assessments I've seen, gas/diesel has to be in the $4/gal+ range to break even over a 5 year ownership.

For me it made sense as my wife was planning on replacing a small SUV (16mpg) with another small SUV (18mpg) so she could get better milage. So we would spend $8k additional after trade to gain 2mpg . I pointed her toward the TDI or the Prius if she wanted milage, and the Prius was just too homely for her. One test drive in the TDI, and she looked over at me and said "This is the one...".

The other thing about Jetta TDI are they are pretty loaded. You can not buy a stripped down model, so naturally their price will be higher.

I paid around $24,000.00 for my 2006 Jetta TDI new. It has leather, sunroof, 6 disc changer, power windows and power driver's seat.

The TDI hold their resale value extremely well too.

After 92,000 miles, repairs have been low. 1.) Had to repair the headliner. 2.) Timing Belt replace 3.) Alignment 4.) New Tires

    That is it.

Btw, Volkswagen is coming out with a New Diesel Passat TDI. I am thinking about buying one of those because they have more room than my Jetta TDI.

A commute car don’t have to by a luxury car, is a car to go from point A to point B. and the resale value of it going down fast because you add miles easy to it.

I'm a little worry about hybrid cars, the good news is you can get 40+ MPG, the bad news is you KNOW you must change the batteries after 4-5 years with a pricy cost (is like 3-5K). I think the technology in batteries is not ready for the price.
The diesel car get a better MPG, but if the fuel pup get bad is another hi cost repair to do.
The corolla don’t offer a lot of luxury options (less things can broken) but I feel like what you paid is not worth.
I got surprise with the Hyundai’s cars, they add a lot of extra stuff and the cars look better with the new models.
    Still thinking what to do!

I’m pretty sure I’m not the only person who have to decide what car to buy.

Yeah, quality of the vehicle overall and engine quality are two different things IMO. My GF's dad has a Yukon that's first engine lasted 175,000 miles. That doesn't mean the vehicle itself isn't a complete heap
