I'll also add that the Trail and SR5 4Runners come with a manual transfer case (same as FJ Cruiser). No electronic switched 4WD!

    *you're

And "off-road capabilities of trucks straight from the factory" is an oxymoron.

    *versatile, useful

There is NO way a jeep transports people more comfortably than a double cab tacoma. Door a top removal is not versatility, it is again directly geared toward offroad visibility. Also, if you only use your truck bed once per year, you bought the wrong vehicle.

Anyhoo, none of this is "beside the point", because the versatility of pickups is the direct reason they sacrifice off road ability off the showroom floor. They need longer wheelbases and longer rear overhangs to allow for bed space and towing ability (also, passenger room if you go the DC route).

Now, a few modifications in the right place, and these issues can be easily overcome...which goes back to my point about offroad capability while stock doesn't mean much.

What Whipper said. You still got a cable electronically actuating your front diff.

. Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road. Tacoma gained a nip-and-tuck for 2012 that gives it a better interior (and a questionable exterior), but its basic ruggedness remains. Long a favorite of the Taliban, for better or worse, Toyota’s smaller pickups are world-renowned for their durability and simplicity. Opt for the TRD Off-Road package and you’ll get a Tacoma that sits about a mile off the road, can accommodate tires suited to a dump truck and includes a useful locking rear differential.
Off road must-haves: The TRD Off-Road package (around $3,700, depending on model), which includes Bilstein shocks, extra skid plates and, most importantly, the locking rear differential.
Great for: A hunter’s vehicle for those who need something more maneuverable than a big pickup.

Arguing with me is also like arguing with a brick wall, so there's that.
