Ford reintroduces the 1965 Mustang

Ford Motor Co. will soon sell brand-new 1965 Ford Mustangs for just $15,000 each. The only hitch: There's some assembly required.

As part of its Ford Reproduction business, Ford revealed today it had approved a new stamping of the steel bodies for first-generation Mustang that buyers could then build into their own 1964 1/2 through 1966 Mustang, using whatever engine, axles, interior and other parts they can find on their own.

The first-generation Mustangs rank as America's most-restored vehicle, and the cottage industry of reproduction parts has grown to where it's possible to build a Mustang just as it would have appeared on the showroom floor in the mid-1960s, down to the pushbutton AM/FM radio.

Ford says the new body shell built by California-based Dynacorn has been improved only slightly with modern welding techniques and rustproofing, and comes out of the crate nearly ready for paint and assembly. The company already offers metal bodies for Mustangs from 1967 through 1970, and has been in talks with Ford to remake the original body of the Ford Bronco. There's still life in those old horses yet.

$15k for a classic "looking" car, with no mechanical parts? So it is not an "original" nor does it have any "original" parts, but they are going to charge a ridiculous price for it? Sounds like a great deal to me, where can I get one?

I guess you guys don't restore classic cars, they are simply to the stage were you can get every part for a mustang to build a complete car.

Ford approved the stamping, not really ironic.

You can buy a 70 dodge challenger too.

I hear you, you can buy everything these days aftermarket, it is not like this is something new, it just has Ford's name on it so some would believe it to be more authentic. The allure of restoring an older car is to do just that, restore as much as possible of the original. This is now taking a new body and adding on the under carriage, however in my opinion, just because Ford makes it now, it doesn't make it anymore authentic. Therefore the price they are asking is ridiculous.

Ford isn't making them, or saying they make it, they just approved the stamping, like they previously approved the stampings for 67-70 mustang fastbacks that dynacorn sells.

The price is similar to all the other bodies that dynacorn sells.

It's apparently worth it to many customers or dynacorn wouldn't be in business.

Well they don't make a lot of their parts, a lot of it comes from other parties and they put it together. According to the article it does say they are selling them, so just like they sell F150's (which are not 100% Ford made), it is as much a Ford product as any. That is splitting hairs. Back to the discussion, sure, they will sell plenty because some will believe they have an authentic 65, some just have too much money to spend, other's just could never afford to own their drem car so they will buy the body and put it on a modified pinto platform. "To me", that is pointless and worthless to "restore".

Modified pinto frame? I just thought the pinto's used one of the mustangs engines not the same body? ANyway yeah I could just look at it as getting one with the plans to restore everything, but you get to skip the step of tearing it all apart, dealing witht the rust and possible body damage etc... would make the project more enjoyable to me because i would have fun in building.. just me!

When you consider that most people that "restore" classic cars don't do the body work themselves and simply pay big bucks for specialty body shops to bring back rusty old hulks to life with often questionable quality it hardly seems weak to take advantage of top quality body parts, including a full shell.

If you have the skills to do the body work yourself more power to ya.

Rare high end muscle cars, yep you pay the price to keep the body, no one will rebody a hemi challenger to one of these new shells and fool anyone.
